What is not so nice is that they did not have the presence of mind to so much withhold so mach as one of them from the hungry scrapper.Add that to the other extinctions off the top of my head: LIRR arch roof MP54, post-war production double-decker, Metro North St Louis 1000's, M-1A ? |

It's worth noting SEPTA will retain a full fleet of Silverliners after their ancient examples are retired. They're even adding new Silverliners which are a lot more railfan friendly than the units they replace. That, and some documents refer to the PATCO cars as 'Silverliners', and they're not really going anywhere. |

These are special due to their link to the PRR and the pre-SEPTA commuter rail system. They are living history, the sort of thing normally only encountered in books and museums. It damn near blew my mind when I first started railfanning that the cars I read about in those black and white Pensy Power books were still out there hauling commuters every day because as far as I knew all that stuff in the books had been long ago vanished...replaced by Amtrak and Conrail and SEPTA. |

You would think RCT&HS would be soliciting donations if they got a 69K tab coming. Curiously nothing in the monthly newsletter has appeared nor does anything on the website . Unless there is some mysterious doner doing this it ain't happening. |

Everything has been on the down low because of the hostility some SEPTA officials have towards preservation efforts and nobody wants to either queer a deal or over promise. Regarding Reading Technical the storage location has been identified as their facility in Reading. I don't know if they will own the car or even provide any of the funding to acquire it. |

It would be shocking if the Philly area railfan community fails to preserve at least one of these cars. Assuming that someone dropped the ball and no cars are being preserved where's the outrage? Where's the donation campaign there I can contribute money to? All I have heard are assurances that cars are going to be saved. |

Oh come on, you can pony up $60,000 (the number that I heard) to buy one from the scrapper.Everybody assumes that Reading Tech wants 9001, which is true. Whether the ball is rolling in that direction or not remains to be seen. We can clear that up by asking a Reading Tech member in good standing who will be on the final trip this evening - Kevin Painter. |

If there's a collection taken I'll gladly write a check, but nobody with sufficient organizational authority has either bothered to ask for one or raised sufficient alarm that such checks were needed. Either people don't care (nothing one can do about that), people are dropping the ball or people are handling it. I've been personally told by Philly NRHS folks (at the 2011 Rodeo) that it was being handled. If people are dropping the ball hopefully they will bother to let me and all the other check writers know before its too late. |

BTW here are some market prices for stainless steel railcars from Gateway Rail Services, most of which would probably sell for above scrap value seeing as how they aren't scrap. 60k for a Silverliner seems a bit much if that's what the scrap dealer wants for them. |

Admittedly this is ancient history, but in each case powered cars were swapped for non powered. Was there a cash premium paid? I have no evidence although I invite further details. |

That RDC had to be worth more than the B&O observation car, though not intrinsically to the LIRR who no longer had any use for 1 RDC, yet the Special Services Department in the LIRR ran in the black and would buy scrap cars for $5K. |
