I don't disagree with your assessment that they won't be moved, but I suggested it as a way to solve this constant fleet swap that happens every summer.

The principle reason for the SMS was to replace trucks that had exceeded their safe life. In a survey of trucks on R-32 cars we found an inordinate number of trucks with transoms dating back to the 1950s and at least one suspected R-10 truck frame

The catch is that the R-32s would not survive the tunnel heat. All RTO has to do is remove every train with hot cars from service and bury Car Equipment with work and falling MDBF. I had proposed that rather than the costly equipment swap, the C's be run to Howard Beach for the summer. This would give the compressor motors the needed break to cool off.

I spoke with a DCE engineer at 130 last year about the R32 HVAC heat issues. Apparently one fix suggested was to remove the heat shield from the car compressor motors.

I may have incorrectly ID'd the car component, however the shop was unaware of this option, and I don't know if the suggestion was ever implemented.

I don't recall a heat issues with R32 HVAC's. Is this an endemic issue with all post GOH R32's? A question for the folks up in the north!!!

It's a manpower and budget issue, as always.

It would be nice to lay up 2 trains of R42's at 111 on Friday night and forget about them for the weekend. But having all weekend put- ins out of ENYD rather than all but 2 (since the 2 at 111 are indeed used on S/S/H) means that, especially at weekend lay up time after 6 PM, one man can do 2 lay ups to 111 whereas if he goes to ENYD he can only do one during that time frame.

And yes, that's in addition to the trains that are to be laid up in the back of PAJ

The problem could be solved by laying up R160's at 111th and putting all R42's in ENY so their service can be limited as much as possible.

I don't recall removing the shroud as a considered solution since the cooling of the motor relied on tunnel air being sucked through the condensers bu the compressor motor fans. This issue led to two findings.
1) Condenser cleaning was not being done properly (Pitkin Shop began doing 32 cars per weekend to help out)
2) The ambient temp of the tunnel air did not permit enough cooling.

This led to finding one of the strangest issues of the entire debacle. I don't remember the exact number but for argument sake, lets say the HVAC compressor motor was designed to operate at a maximum temp of 135 Degrees F. Yet it was discovered that the thermal overload protectors in the motors would open up at a temp which was 5 degrees below the maximum operating temp. When the motor cooled, the overloads would close and the motor would work normally again.

Back in the SubChat days though it seemed to be "common knowledge" that Phase I R32s had the best A/C around... the Slant R40s were close behind...

I do remember finding more hot cars on the E in 2005ish...

With the exception of the suspected R-10 truck frame, why would any R-32s have transoms dating from the 1950s since they weren't delivered until 1964?

I know the car types, but why would transoms from any of those cars end up on cars that were delivered much later?

A truck with clasp brakes and 2 motors that would work on an R-12 would work on any other contract using clasp brakes if you mount the tripcock on the correct side. "We" did not discover the over-age trucks. Someone else either knew or suspected and the shops with R-32s were asked to survey their fleets. I was actually surprised at the number of 1951 - 1955 trucks that I had on my fleet.
