The R32 sign roll doesn't correctly describe today's B or M routes. I guess they could patch the B signs to say Brighton instead of West End, just like the original roll signs were patched to say B instead of BB. It may seem like a minor point, but having consistently wrong route descriptions on the trains is undesirable.

The t/o-c/r may shut it off, but when the guy who changes the ads, the car cleaners or the RCI's come on to do work, they tend to leave the a/c on when done.

The R32's had plenty of a/c problems while on the E. I documented it many times over the years with posts on this board. I've told stories about taking trains with hot cars to the yard, but they were cool when I got there because the doors were kept closed for at least 30 minutes.

Since there is a love affair on this board with the R32's many feel these cars can do nothing wrong.

That was always characteristic of the difference between all WH and GE controllers. Does any former or present T/O remember the WH controllers on the R-27s and 30s on the BMT/IND or the IRT R-26s and 29s? Those were horrendous to hold down especially on long lines like the old QJ Jamaica to Stl or even the RR from Astoria to 95.

I honestly don't know what percentage of R32s vs R46s a/c don't work, but from my personal experience, the a/c on the R46s are horrible. I just went through this on both the "A" and the "R" trains today. Five separate cars and every one of them were bad.

Yes they were a problem, especially in big cell thunder storms that dumped a Hugh amount of rain in a short time.
Some grates got cuffs around them.
Still there was a lose of ventilation.
I think some of the fault goes to the EPA and keeping catch basins clear to take large influxes of rainfall.

Way back, when the G.O.H. was done.
A.C. was installed in those cars that formerly only had fans.
To insure the A.C. would work properly, those door catches, that could hold open a storm door were replaced with a catch that would not remain open.

With the door open, the car was noisy, if both doors were open, noisy and air flow.
Those four teensy weensy, tilt windows just barely keep the Co level from getting lethal.

Part of the problem was that the Jamaica Water Company's wells were contaminated by chemical spills. Jamaica was switched over to city water. Wells that had been in use for a hundred years were no longer being pumped and the water table rose to its natural level.

More ground water is getting into the storm sewers and they have less capacity for storm run-off. Catch basins along Hillside overflow even if they are not clogged. Sometimes water comes out of the sewer grates instead of going down. The street floods over the curb and water runs into the subway ventilation grates and the station stairways.

The subway pumps are designed to pump into the storm sewers which are already full.

Raising the ventilation grates on Hillside and rebuilding the stairways so that you go up one or two steps before you go down does seem to have helped to keep water out. There was a proposal to buy some land on Hillside and build a big tank for the subway pumps to pump into but nothing seems to have happened yet.

What are you talking about?

You would need at least 2 employees to open up the sign box, unroll the signs on both sides to the place to be modified and carefully place tacky looking stickers inside and outside.

Seemingly simple to you, but not in NYCT structure. These 2 employees would be taken away from a different task and this new task would take much longer than you may think.

The barns used to have lots of workers. Today I can assure you there are far less.

Believe me, the R32's are not going to the B or M or anywhere else. The may be on the A, they may be on the C, but there are not going to get reassigned away from 207 barn.

They put two sets of new decals on for the Lenox reroutes in 1998. I am not saying that it wasn't labor intensive, but the labor involved was obviously not extensive enough to prevent the MTA from retrofitting them onto a much larger fleet for a sign useful for a short period of time.

Sorry Bill, but I disagree. The cars are going through SMS right now, and if this had been considered ahead of time, this could have been done concurrently. We're talking about 222 cars. How long you figure it takes to do each one? How labor intensive is it to switch the A/C fleets, plus move equipment to and from Jamaica and ENY yards each spring/summer?

And, even IF you couldn't do that, because applying decals to 222 cars is just prohibitvely expensive, leave the roll signs unchanged. People will still know that the M is going between 71st and Metropolitan.

The R-32s are not being moved - period. The only exception to that statement will be if 207th St. is closed as a B division maintenance shop and their fleet is moved permanently to Pitkin Shop. The politics of moving the oldest fleet in the system to a different division, alone would make it prohibitive.

In my personal experience, they had the best AC (outside the NTT's) of any car. I remember one a few years back that spent a very hot weekend at Rockaway Park sealed up. When the conductor finally opened the doors for service on a Monday morning every surface was coated with condensation. Had to sit on newspaper.

Just put R160's out there if you have to and let the old dogs sleep on weekends.

Then watch them get Tagged beyond Belief...
