I heard a similar story. But, according to the one I was told, the plan dated back to 1940, when the city closed the 9th Ave. el. However, the tunnels were not wide enough for subway type 3rd rail. It was either widen the tunnels ot cut the 3rd rail shoes back on the IRT subway cars, so they wouldn't scrape the side walls. Ridership decline was another factor. The origional 3 car shuttles were cut back to 2 car trains in 1941. I don't know when the shuttle was reduced to its single northbound track- does anyone know? . Also, the area was served by the 155th Street IND. It was sad to see the old bridge go because it was the last steam powered swing bridge in NYC. |
