You're both wrong. As was mentioned in another post, the IRT on portions shared by elevated and subway equipment used 2 contact rails, one for subway equipment and the other for el cars. Subway shoes rode over the el third rail and made contact with the subway third rail. What I don't understand is why the IRT unlike the BMT did not design a subway shoe that could make contact with both types of third rail. The BMT shoes were designed so that they had a second contact point that could pick up current from the closer and higher el type third rail as well as the lower and farther away subway type third rail. Thus on portions of BMT els that operated both subway and elevated equipment, only el type third rail needed to be used since the BMT subway shoes were capable of using both types of third rail.
