What was this abandoned rail line? The Central Railroad of New Jersey's main line. The original Raritan Valley Line, which ran out of Jersey City (today's Liberty State Park) and connected to other railroads like the Reading (in Bound Brook NJ, Bethlehem and Allentown PA). Trains ran on this line to places like Scranton, Harrisburg, Philly, Chicago, St. Louis and Washington DC (even to Toronto, when the LVRR used it prior to building its own main line through NJ). But instead of keeping it active, like the former PRR and E-L main lines, NJDOT let it rot. HBLRT operates on its ROW in Bayonne into JC. This is what the ROW looked like towards its end. ![]() |
