The arrow-1's were certainly nicer than the MP-54's they were replacing but they had one disadvantage! When they broke down (which was frequently) the crews had a hell of a job getting them going again. I remember one morning commute (must have been 1969 or so) when the engineman had to operate from the second pair with the conductor up front calling signals. 15mph from Metuchen to Newark with the whole railroad behind us cursing.At least they were air conditioned. However the 2-3 seating was not appreciated. F-N |
