But is a stadium nothing more than a giant TV studio? Why even open the gates for people to watch if they just don't matter? Why not just add canned cheering to the TV and radio audio and fill the stands with cardboard cutouts of fans? The people who go to the stadium are actually paying to see the game, and in most cases, paying dearly. They really need to be treated better, though if, as has been suggested, maintenance has been deferred so badly, perhaps this is simply a matter of the chickens coming home to roost. Wallyhorse actually has a few good points there; I'm just not sure how to accommodate badly deferred maintenance without moving toward the attitude of, "We could keep these trains moving and these tracks maintained if only we didn't have to worry about these stupid passengers boarding and exiting all the time..." |
