BART wasn't supposed to be a subway, it was supposed to be commuter rail of the future. It's basically Frankfurt/Stuttgart/Munich S-Bahn except because we do things the FRA way, we can't apply rapid transit techniques to mainline railway, so we ended up reinventing the wheel to do what the Germans do with regular tech. commuter rail of the future winds up looking a lot like a subway but with longer distances served. Minimizing staff, maximizing standing space, automating fare collection, and running more service further away from the core? We can't have this in America! |
