I agree with you that common sense and orientation skills are most important. However when you are in a new area and the road starts twisting and turning, it is easy to lose your orientation. The fact that you were there before helped you. My point was that good signage is needed primary for people who are somewhere for the first time.

The only reason I mentioned the first example about turning into the East River is because of the post saying that all you have to do is follow the GPS and you won't have problems because you don't need the signs. That's just not true.

The other example was when I was testing the GPS in my own neighborhood. It was constantly messing up. It told me to turn left when there was a barrier peventing a left turn. Another time it said turn left in front of a No Left Turn sign. A third time it told me to make a right on the wrong side of a divided road where traffic was going in the opposite direction. I knew that it was a two way street when the GPS thought it was one-way. Had it been dark and I didn't know it was two way I could have gotten into a head on collision by listening to it. Also, a few blocks later it steered me down a side street instead of the main road because the side street was at a slight angle and perhaps .001 mile shorter.
