It's worth noting, even though it has no doubt been mentioned on this site before, that the IND 6th Ave./34th Street Station was one of the most challenging tunneling projects ever constructed. It has to go around the H&M (today's PATH), go below the BMT, and go above the LIRR/PRR tunnels. And up till Dec. 1938 the 6th Ave. El was runnng as well, so it had to be underpinned.

Next time at that station notice how the tracks dip in the middle to go under the BMT and then go up southward so they are alongside the PATH tunnels.
