Does anyone know at what point the inter-division IND/BMT transfer at 34th Street was created? I am wondering if it was there from the beginning, since the city had already taken over the BMT lines earlier in 1940, and given the construction complexity, it would have been much easier to have the transfer.

As I recall the 34th Street mezzanine from the 1950s, it had some retail space in the area between the two divisons, but I don't recall if it physically separated them.

In my recollection, it was possible to access the IND division from the entrance at Macy's corner, on the west (BMT) side of the station. But perhaps you crossed the former BMT mezzanine to reach the IND turnstiles on the east side of the station, and BMT fare control was on the north/sough axis.
