The doubling of subway fare to a dime on 7.1.1948 had to be softened by eliminating some of the double-fare stations. Prior to that date, both at Herald Square and Times Square, you left one system, walked a few steps or more and reentered a separate fare zone. There were two sets of change agents, noticeably different turnstiles, and "old company" special decor. I recall going with my Dad on several explorations to see the new arrangement of what we now call fare control. Prior to that date, Dad would never, never switch from our IRT (home on Marble Hill) to another subway company if he could accomplish the trip on one nickle.
