It was! Unfortunately for the City, the H&M had deliberately been built with steel ringed tunnels to encase their smaller cars.. This prevented the big railroads from taking it over, widening the tunnels, and running their full sized cars through it. I am surprised the the engineers who planned the proposed IND use of the H&M tunnels didn't realize this before construction began! Perhaps, we would not have to have waited until 1967 for 6th Ave express service between West 4th Street and 34th Street.
