The immigrant factor has not been discussed. The vast majority of Stuyvesant's Asian students are foreign born or first generation American. Indeed, Ms. Miller the lonely black at Stuyvesant, is also an immigrant.I've believe that immigrants' children are exposed to a greater desire for academic success than children who can trace their American roots back several generations. I attribute some of this to the American pop culture that aspires to the lowest common denominator rather than the greatest common denominator. Acquiring knowledge can be entertaining. However, all one sees on television are gun battles, inane reality shows and car chases. They are easier to create than dialogue. |

No. The differences in immigrant groups progress was documented by Moynihan and Glazer in "Beyond the Melting Pot" back in 1963. The immigrant groups studied were the Irish, Italians, Puerto Ricans, Blacks and Jews.A contemporary study would look at different Hispanic groups. However, I was referring to what I perceive as an diluting of the initial immigrant drive for success in succeeding generations. |

Were they from immigrant families? Most of the Jewish kids I know who went to those schools were Ashkenazi and American and not immigrant. They were very much like The Beastie Boys who were typical of the makeup of Stuyvesant in the 80's. American-Jewish and not from "recent immigrant" parents. Besides, New York City is a city of immigrants. If being an immigrant gave kids an academic advantage, Stuyvesant would be packed with Mexicans, Dominicans, Guyanese, Indians, etc........... |
