I live in Flushing. There are about 5 such prep schools within a 5 block radius of my apartment. One day last summer, I had lunch in a pizza restaurant during the one nearby prep school's lunch break. The prep schools are used. It explained to me the curious absence of kids on the streets during summer.

About once a week I also satisfy my nostalgic urge for bagels and lox by going to my old Kew Gardens Hills neighborhood. There are private schools there now too. They are religious schools for the largely orthodox Jewish community that has taken root there. I'll sometimes compete with these yeshiva students for a seat, if I mistime my arrival.

Based on overheard conversations, I'd say the Asians are on the right track regarding schooling. The Stuyvesant figures confirm my assessment.
