UCC is the denomination that they attended, but many Protestants aren't as picky as you might think. So is my sister-in-law who's a staunch Republican.It's an old mainline denomination just like the Methodists, Presbyterians, etc. Obama's church was called Trinity just like you have churches called Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church. More on that Protestant denonimation here Harvard and Yale were founded by UCCs when they were still called Congregationalists. I think Riverside Church may be UCC but I may be wrong. Maybe they are Methodists. |

I totally agree to an extent, but it TOTALLY depends on people. I have found Lutherans to be much more unwilling to go to attend other services than other Protestants, but they are also more hostile towards Catholics than the other protestants (in my experience, that may only depend on the specific Lutherans I was dealing with).I am Catholic, but I could care less about going to any other church. (But that is not true of all Catholics, many are far from tolerant of Protestant churches, but that also depends on the age of the person, and also where they are from. My father is Presbyterian, but his family was originally Lutheran. My grandmother went to a few protestant churches, but then wound up going to a nearby Presbyterian church because a neighbor and good friend went there, so she "became Presbyterian", and raised my father in that church. He could care less though, over the years I have been to many protestant churches over the years, and while they are slightly different, most are more similar than different (Although I have only been to the mainline ones, I have never been to some of the more evangalistic churches, so can't comment on them). Episcopal/Anglican is almost identical to Catholic...at least the mass anyway. |

That may mean that old NY stuff like Calvinist-inspired Dutch Reformed churches are UCC. I guess "Congregationalist" or "Dutch Reformed" sounds better than "UCC". |

I have a hard time in some "mainline" churches, much less the evangalistic type churches, I just can't handle or tolerate any of those churches that start screaming and hollering about "Jesus coming" etc. And if Obama's church is Congregational/Church of Christ, that is one of the churches I couldn't possibly sit through, judging by Wright (and even if he wasn't spouting hate), it's just the type of preaching I can't handle. |

The only bits that I really like about church are the music, but more black gospel and not much else. The good part about Catholic mass is that it's short where most services at black churches can go on for hours. The multi-racial, mega-church services are in between. Not too long, but not very interesting. |

I have been to quite a few AME masses, and my aunt is regular Methodist so have been to many of those too, and I can vouch that the two are almost identical, at least in the way the service goes. The preaching style is sort of different, as is the response from the congregation. AME is much more lively than sitting in a regular Methodist church, but that also could depend on the minister too. |

I think a lot has to do with the minister too though.The only different I have noticed at AME as opposed to Methodist is that the congregation was a bit more into it. But if you want to compare an AME church to a different branch Black church, the AME is almost snooze time compared. But again, a lot has to do with the congregation too. I find Catholics to be the most dazed and unresponsive. Aside from the "Catholic aerobics" of having to stand sit stand kneel stand kneel they whole mass, it's the only thing that keeps you awake in there. Most protestant churches have the congregation much more enthusiastic (but again, this is just in my experience). But then there's a fine line, as while I don't want to fall asleep, I also can't handle when the congregation is "so into it" that they are basically in a trance either (as with Evangalists). But then again, I rarely go to church anymore to begin with, so not that it much matters either way.... |
