The presumption should be that day laborers and their employers do not pay proper taxes. So even if the Arizona law fails in court, this provision should be enacted on its own right. |

If you feel strongly one way or the other you can make a difference. Plus people are talking about it which is good. Maybe it's too emotional for reasonable discussion right now, but I don't see that changing anytime soon. |

Amusing bit at the end of the local news ... they hit up a mall over in Bruno county, and a couple that was planning on vacationing in Phoenix (?!) decided to go to Colorado instead because they were concerned about being detained because they don't have passports. Reporter asked them where they heard that. Rush Limbaugh. :) |

Blocking the street to go buy donuts isn't a crime. Blocking the street to to put up garage sale signs isn't a crime. But blocking the street to hire someone looking for work is? How can they make a no standing law for only one activity? I don't know if it's unconstitutional, but it certainly is arbitrary. They're concerned about only one particular type of traffic congestion. |

For a state that depends on tourism...this is a bad move by the state of Arizona. Also, people will call me crazy or a sensationalist, but I don't think that the 2011 MLB All Star game will be played in Arizona. It's scheduled to be there, but I believe that the MLB will likely choose a different venue, especially if the bill goes to a referendum and passes. |

I love it, a lot of people hate it. There really isn't middle ground. It's a dirtier, more liberal, higher altitude, slightly cooler, slightly more Mexican, smaller version of Phoenix. Tucson has a lot of character to it. However, it's also one of the biggest small towns out there. It's city council would also give the SF Board of Supervisors a run for their money as far as whacko Democrats go. |

Both me and the wife have been putting on a show here for quite a while as well. When ya live out in farm land, one already knows that all the liberals got eaten by bears in the 60's. :)I guess I'm closer to libertarian myself more than any of the other organized religions, but truth be told, I'm an unabashed pragmatist. Politically, I believe in whatever actually WORKS rather than the philosophies behind it. To sum it up more gracefully, "if it works, keep plugging along - if it doesn't work, STOP!" Haven't found a party yet that agrees with those principles and so I remain "unregistered." But for now, the republicans are completely batshit crazy, and democrats aren't far behind. Nah ... futility is not an option - ridicule is! Heh. My background is the worst of all philosophical possibilities - I was trained in engineering and journalism, with my bigger passion in engineering. But I ended up in broadcasting where I was able to do both, forever vexing my supervision over which side of the camera I wanted to work on. BOTH!But engineers really piss off political people - we don't care what your campaign ads say, if you hire us up to work for you, we're going to figure out what's broken, order up parts, take a wrench to it and make that bastard fly ... among engineers, it's a known truth that pigs really *CAN* fly ... provided that you supply sufficient thrust. But we'll also warn you that you don't want to be underneath one as it flies overhead and once we've warned you, we sit back and watch as you ignore our warning with glee. My favorite politician is Tippi Turtle. :) |

It seems like a fairly easy thing to do. It's something that many police departments (mostly in cooperation with ICE) are already doing. Why do you think the law will be repealed? Is there any evidence that the majority of Arizonans oppose it? I do suspect that most police departments won't go crazy trying to enforce it. First of all, does hanging around Home Depot speaking Spanish constitute reasonable suspicion of illegal presence in the US? Probably not, given that many poor residents work as day laborers too because they can't get ongoing construction jobs. So if you decide you can't detain anyone just for being at Home Depot, what kind of activity actually generates a reasonable suspicion, other than someone carrying a sign saying "I am an illegal alien"? |
