First off, may the souls of the innocents rest in eternal peace.

Last evening, as I was listening to and watching the news coverage, primarily CBS News and 1010 WINS, I was struck by the utter incompetence of some of the on-scene reporters as well as the studio anchors. I have rarely if ever known this to be the case to such a degree in similar incidents. I certainly understand the adrenaline is flowing during "Breaking News" but as professionals where was the professionalism? These reporters and anchors were lost trying to speak coherently and extemporaneously while at times contradicting themselves and others while throwing out impertinent information. Some of the questioning of witnesses was scattershot at best, bewildering and insensitive at worst. One anchor for CBS New York, who is typically composed, actually laughed a couple times while discussing the shooter being caught by surveillance cameras walking across the plaza in broad daylight holding a rifle - I understand "nervous laughter" from a couple witnesses as they were answering inane questions. This may be the cynical cortelyounext but the whole thing seemed almost as if the journalists were acutely aware that they were in the spotlight.

Welcome to the club. Now you will notice this on every newscast. I've even seen the AP get the weather wrong. The current and past, not the predictions.

Shooting at NYC office building—NYPD officer among dead—Hochul calls for banning assault weapons

iHeart Radio

Hochul Urges Congress to Ban Assault Weapons After NYC Shooting

New York Governor Kathy Hochul is calling on Congress to pass an assault weapons ban following a mass shooting on Monday (July 28) in Midtown Manhattan. The shooter, Shane Devon Tamura, drove from Las Vegas to New York with an assault rifle and killed four people inside a Park Avenue office building before taking his own life. Despite New York's strict gun laws, the shooter was able to obtain the weapon legally in Nevada, where gun laws are more lenient.

The victims included NYPD Officer Didarul Islam, security officer Aland Etienne, and Blackstone executive Wesley LePatner. Mayor Eric Adams noted that Tamura may have intended to target the NFL headquarters but took the wrong elevator. A note found on Tamura expressed grievances with the NFL and claimed he suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a brain condition linked to repeated head trauma.

Governor Hochul emphasized the need for a nationwide assault weapons ban, stating, "Our laws only go so far when an AR-15 can be obtained in a state with weak gun laws and brought into New York to commit mass murder." Flags on state government buildings will be flown at half-staff in honor of the victims until they are laid to rest.

The NYPD is investigating the incident and has sent teams to Las Vegas to gather more information about Tamura and the firearms used in the attack. The shooting marks the deadliest gun attack in New York City in 25 years.

That will never happen. They should have learned their lesson with prohibition. They outlawed the sale and manufacture of beer and booze and people still drank. If they ban the sale and possession of firearms, people will still get, have and keep weapons.

If they ban the sale and possession of firearms

Except that almost no one is calling for a ban on the sale and possession of firearms.

This is in contrast to the situation with Prohibition, which originally had remarkably widespread support.

That's because people thought that "intoxicating liquors . . . for beverage purposes" meant hard liquors like whiskey and rye, and not wine and beer.

And that makes gun control actually analogous to alcohol prohibition: People think that gun control means just banning what people call "assault rifles"*, and don't realize that it would mean a ban on all firearms.

*Which few can seem to define.

People drank less during prohibition. In that way, it actually succeeded.

Similarly, gun prohibition* would invariably lead to a decrease in the availability of guns. This would almost certainly have the effect of decreasing "mass shooter events" because the nuts who perpetrate them would be less likely to obtain guns.

The "outlaws" who would still have guns if you outlaw guns are organized criminals and people acquainted with them. It's the same way that the market for illicit drugs works today.

*which I oppose, but that is beside the point.

There are a few problems with this.
Guns are usually prohibited in office buildings. They have signs and stickers.
There is a guard there to tell them not to bring their gun in.

They should ban shooting people and maybe criminalize murder?

Why would banning something else be the magic item that changes everything.

Not that long ago, you would be facing hard time if you were caught with a couple of nickel bags. It was very illegal then, but if you knew somebody who knew somebody you could get whatever you wanted.
Point being no matter how hard you wanted to eliminate something, you could get what you need. Cant eliminate it, then legalize and tax it as we see that happening now.
Think of the local bookie who engaged in a very illegal activity. He got knocked out of business by OTB and lotto games.

No, this isn’t true. Banning something always decreases its supply. It simply isn’t true that if you want something bad enough you can always find it.

What legalizing gambling did is that it increased considerably the prevalence of gambling. Way more people gamble now than did before. This is true of practically every legalized vice.

I have no connections, and I think there is a far more than 50% chance I could acquire a gun without being arrested. I've certainly read that there are plenty of gun stores in VA that will sell a gun to a non-resident. Worst that's likely to happen is that the store manager would kick me out and I could just try another store.

And in fact a distant relative of mine, who had no criminal connections at all, managed to buy a gun illegally, which he used to kill himself.

This is is a bad example as you are giving the example of something that is not only completely legal for most people here in New York (although you have to jump through hoops), but is also legal in another state, and there are no customs checkpoints between here and Virginia.

Now change your example to cocaine or some other nationally illegal drug and see how well it works.

Cocaine is any easy one. I just have to interact with one of the people who mumbles stuff to me as I walk through Washington Square Park.

But I was addressing your statement: It simply isn’t true that if you want something bad enough you can always find it.

Consider child pornography. From what I read there is a huge market for it. It's also far more serious than cocaine to get caught possessing a small amount of it. But obviously there are a lot of people who want it so badly that they will take the associated risk.

And they seem to usually be successful at getting it. One reads of maybe hundreds of people getting arrested for possession, but of discoveries of stashes of millions of pieces of child pornography. That implies a lot of people are acquiring it without getting caught.

Cocaine is any easy one. I just have to interact with one of the people who mumbles stuff to me as I walk through Washington Square Park.

I think it used to be possible to buy drugs in Washington Square Park years ago simply because the police didn't care, thus it became tacit decriminalization. I was referring to an environment where the laws are actually enforced. In another example of making something illegal actually discouraging illegal behavior: Speed cameras actually lower rates of speeding; revenues from speed cameras go down over time.

That implies a lot of people are acquiring it without getting caught.

Photos and videos are non-rivalrous goods and millions of them take up hardly any space.

Since you mention reading about busts, I wouldn't be surprised if many of the people busted for trying to obtain illegal goods are busted for it the very first time they tried to get it. Like the people on To Catch A Predator who claim they had never done anything like that before. Those people wanted to do something badly enough, but couldn't find it in real life because the laws were being well enforced.

The argument I was making was that prohibition didn't work because "if you want something bad enough you can always find it." Prohibition DID work; alcohol consumption went down significantly and never even came close to recovering until after prohibition ended.

In Sydney Biddle Barrows’ Mayflower Madam she noted that some of the customers of her escort agency were mainly interested in obtaining cocaine. They didn’t know where to find it, and figured that because the escorts were already doing something illegal they might have drug connections.

Thanks for posting that article. Very interesting. But it doesn't refute the fact that alcohol was available if you knew where to get it. That was my point.
Growing up in Woodside, my parents told me of a "speakeasy" that was located on 39th Ave & 65th St (the current location of Gleasons Paint Supplies) Alcohol flowed freely there as long as the local police from the 110 Pct were taken care of. Thats just one example of night clubs that flourished in different neighborhoods, as long as you kept the local police on the "pad". Corruption and bootlegging were out of control.
Weather prohibition was successful is open for debate depending on what side of the fence (bar?) you're on. My opinion is that it did more harm than good.

This is why marijuana used to be a “gateway drug.” When it was illegal, if you knew someone who would sell you weed, then you would ask them where you could find other drugs.

If you go into a legal weed dispensary and ask them where you can get cocaine, they would tell you to fuck off.

Your point was that prohibition didn’t work because alcohol could still be obtained by people connected enough to crime. My response is that it still decreased alcohol consumption considerably, so it worked.

Like alcohol prohibition, I oppose gun prohibition because I think that restricting the ability to own and carry firearms is worse than allowing more deaths from gun use.

Whoops, no sorry. Almost mistook you for Pete al-Rosa.

But no, statistics during Prohibition do not indicate a reduction in booze drinking.
