I guess "ray of hope" in your mind = "mission accomplished".My "ray of hope" won't begin until after one of the treatments under study is proven to be effective. It won't be "mission accomplished" because there's still the manufacturing and distribution logistics problem to solve. NYC vaccinated 6.3 million residents against smallpox in a 1 month period in 1947. 5 million were vaccinated within the first 2 weeks. The City started with only 650,000 vaccines on hand. This crisis is much bigger because the disease has spread beyond a handful of people and it effects the entire country and the world. That's 6 billion doses to manufacture and a distribution area much larger than NYC's 300+ square miles. |

I was like, Holy shit, this is not the flu. Watching this relatively young guy, gasping for air, pink frothy secretions coming out of his tube.”Since last week, he’s been running ventilators for the sickest COVID-19 patients. Many are relatively young, in their 40s and 50s, and have minimal, if any, preexisting conditions in their charts. He is overwhelmed, stunned by the manifestation of the infection, both its speed and intensity. The ICU where he works has essentially become a coronavirus unit. He estimates that his hospital has admitted dozens of confirmed or presumptive coronavirus patients. About a third have ended up on ventilators. His hospital had not prepared for this volume before the virus first appeared. One physician had tried to raise alarms, asking about negative pressure rooms and ventilators. Most staff concluded that he was overreacting. “They thought the media was overhyping it,” the respiratory therapist told me. “In retrospect, he was right to be concerned.” This is knocking out what should be perfectly fit, healthy people. “I have patients in their early 40s and, yeah, I was kind of shocked. I’m seeing people who look relatively healthy with a minimal health history, and they are completely wiped out, like they’ve been hit by a truck. This is knocking out what should be perfectly fit, healthy people. Patients will be on minimal support, on a little bit of oxygen, and then all of a sudden, they go into complete respiratory arrest, shut down and can’t breathe at all.” |

Dr. Frieden has more experience with infectious diseases than is generally known, too. Before he was the head of the CDC under Obama, he was the DOHMH commissioner in NYC. Before that, he was the Medical Control Director with us at the EMS Command. Dr. Frieden made a point of riding with an EMS supervisor at least once a month, to see for himself what was going on with the city's patient population, and that allowed him to get familiar with all kinds of "exotic" pathogens.Dr. Frieden, like Dr. Fauci, is eminently qualified to discuss things like viruses. Too bad the Trumpers refuse to understand these things. |

In response, like today, my employer put a photocopy of the CDC graphic of how to cover your mouth when you sneeze, and maybe wash your hands(as I read it, people were walking out w/o washing). That was the grand advice. I managed to not get a flu at all that year. Never got a shot. |

The basic problem is that the number of confirmed cases is not leveling off in the UK.This is an exponential model. In ancient times, before computers (BC), there was a fairly simple way to see whether an accumulation was exponential. Plot it on semi-log paper. If it's exponential, it will be a straight line. If the rate of increase is decreasing, the slope will decrease. If the virus is completely eradicated, the slope will be 0, indicating no new cases. Here's a link to a site that plots the day to day accumulation in the UK. The first graph shows the accumulated number of cases vs. date. Select the logarithmic scale. Compare the latest slope with that from March 15th. That's when Dr. Furgeson made his predictions. The fourth graph shows the accumulated number of deaths vs. date. It also has a logarithmic scale. It's also not showing any downturn. Compare that to South Korea. Check the number of cases on the log scale. Notice how the curve starts deviating from its initial straight line upward trajectory. That deviation isn't showing up yet in the UK data. |

Maybe my eyesight is bad, but the rate of increase of new cases does appear to be decreasing on the logarithmic scale. It's been increasing a factor of ten about every 10 days. It's been almost 10 days and it doesn't look like they will get to 100k cases anytime soon, if at all. |

Posted by Stephen Bauman on Sat Apr 4 18:54:01 2020, in response to Re: I Am Not Panicking, posted by Easy on Sat Apr 4 17:44:08 2020. Maybe my eyesight is bad, but the rate of increase of new cases does appear to be decreasing on the logarithmic scale. You don't have to use your eyesight. You can get the actual number by placing the cursor on the data. It reads 3/14 1,140 3/24 8,077 + 608.5% => 60.85% per day 4/3 38,163 + 372.5% => 37.25% per day That is a decrease but still out of control. Now let's take a look at South Korea Let's start at the initial linear period 2/18 31 2/22 436 +1306% => 327% per day 2/26 1261 +189.2% => 47.3% per day 3/1 3736 +196.3% => 49.1% per day 3/5 6284 +68.2% => 17.1% per day 3/9 7478 +19.0% => 4.7% per day 3/13 7979 +6.7% => 1.67% per day That shows percentage coming down. One way to visualize how well a curve is an exponential on semi-log paper is to put a ruler on it. You can use the edge of a card or paper. The UK curve is pretty straight from March 3rd to yesterday. Here's a link to a table that shows the day-to-day percentage change in NYC. Let's compare the results of NYC vs. South Korea from the 50% increase per day point. In the ROK, it decreased to 1.67% in 12 days. The 50% day was about March 17th. 12 days later, on March 29th it was brought down to 5.8%. South Korea was about 3 1/2 times more effective than NYC. |

Bodies piling up on the street have a long term effect on the economy.Studies from 1918 have shown that US cities that left social isolation in place for longer did better economically than those that cut it short or never really put it into place at all. |
