Actualy, for most gays and lesbians, it's the other way around. Constant reminders from a very homophobic society that you are "not acceptable" can and will hammer your self-esteem into the ground. It's still legal in 29 states to fire or refuse employment to people for the sole reason that you are gay or lesbian. It's legal to evict, or refuse to rent or sell housing to gays or lesbians in 31 states. The federal government, through its Defense Of Marriage Act and Don't Ask/Don't Tell policy, relegate the lives and relationships of gays and lesbians to secondary status in American life and law. Finally, violence against gays is an increasing, ongoing threat to the life and safety of the entire LGBT community.

All this against Americans whose expression of love for people of the same gender has no impact on the lives of their straight neighbors. Gays and lesbians are, generally speaking, quite comfortable with their sexual orientation. They are made, however, to be uncomfortable, by the hateful society in which they must exist. In many other countries around the world, homophobia and violence--often state-sanctioned--is even worse.
