There are undoubtedly many different reasons, but I think that a big part of it is because many gays are not completely comfortable with their own sexuality suffer from low self-esteem. They want to blame homophobic heterosexuals for their issues and they think that if they can get public acknowledgment and acceptance of their sexuality that they will feel better about themselves.

I don't mean to offend anyone, but that is what I see.
