Also, when patronage is light like at night, local buses skip many stops and are able to go at 30 mph as long as it doesn't put them ahead of schedule. |

Going 35 mph on the Concourse is not dangerous.The city should focus on ticketing the small percentage of drivers who willfully drive dangerously. We've all seen them: tailgating, changing lanes too closely to weave through traffic, going 50 mph on busy local roads, cutting off legally-crossing pedestrians while turning. |

It appears that the bus is scheduled to travel at an average speed of 10 mph. Since it is doubtful that anyone is even on the bus at that time, that would have to mean for the bus to have a realistic schedule, virtually every traffic light would have to be out of sync. If that is not the case, there is way too much time in the schedule. |

It's all a ploy to collect more in fines, disguised as a safety measure.When the sanitation fines started for recycling, the commissioner promised that enforcement agents would use discretion. Instead people have been fined $100 because someone passed by and threw a non-recyclable item in the recyclable can while waiting to be picked up. Videotape documented agents giving tickets for recyclables in a non-recyclable bag when they ever even opened the bag to check. Another agent was shown on surveillance tape dragging a piece of trash from one house to the other and placing it in front of the stairway and promptly writing a summons. Nothing happens to these agents because the city is only interested in the revenue. When a councilman introduced legislation requiring agents to prove alleged violations by providing photographic evidence, it was defeated. Once speed cameras arrive thousands of summonses will be issued daily to cars going 31 mph on the Grand Concourse which is not at all dangerous. Once the locations are known, everyone will slow down just as they pass the camera and then speed up again. That will increase the number of rear end accidents, tie up traffic and increase insurance rates. And there will be no affect on serious accidents. Flagrant speeders who speed now will continue to speed. |

My understanding was that all 20 of the currently authorized speed cameras are or will be in school zones, as would 120 more in the City, 69 in Suffolk County, and 56 in Nassau County if the bill that passed the Assembly today becomes law. So, only school zones, if any, along the Concourse, would be subject to speed cameras. And, school zones already have a 20 MPH speed limited during designated hours. |
