City agencies are ramping up efforts to make the Bronx safer for drivers and pedestrians.

Grand Concourse will be home to the second of 25 planned “arterial slow zones,” highly trafficked streets on which speed limits will be dropped to 25 miles per hour from the citywide limit of 30 miles per hour, transportation officials announced Thursday. The rollout is part of a city initiative to eliminate traffic deaths within a decade.

“Vision Zero is a commitment made for safer streets and roadways by our Mayor Bill de Blasio,” said NYPD Chief of Transportation Thomas Chan. “The epidemic of traffic fatalities and injuries are unacceptable."

Beginning this month, traffic signals will be resynchronized along the Concourse between 140th St. and Mosholu Parkway, a 5.2-mile stretch that recorded 12 traffic-related fatalities between 2008 and 2012.

“It’s a great first step,” said Jill Guidera, the field organizing manager of Transportation Alternatives. “Reducing the speed limit is going to save lives and improve the quality of life. Almost everyone in the borough uses Grand Concourse, and today’s announcement was a major milestone for the Bronx.”

The arterial zones target city streets that have experienced the highest number of fatalities and serious injuries.

The first zone was announced last week on Atlantic Avenue, an eight mile stretch spanning Brooklyn and Queens that logged 25 traffic fatalities between 2008 and 2012.
