There were a bunch of changes to add service to the SI Mall in the 1980s. I believe the S61 was added around 1988, and I think the S115 extension (to become the S55/56) and S102 and S103 extensions to the SI Mall happened around 1983 or so. |

R-105 was a crosstown that ran mostly along Clove Road and terminated at Sand Lane & Seaside Boulevard. It replaced by the R-7 which ran from Port Richmond to Bay Ridge with short turns at Victory Boulevard.R-116 ran with the R-115 - The Princes Bay-Huguenot-Annadale-Woodrow Shuttle. It terminated at S.S. White plant on Seguine Avenue next to Richmond Memorial Hospital. R-114 ran with the R-4 between Port Richmond and Egbert Square. On the drawing board was an Amboy Road Route that was going to be the R-118 |

Those were the days of the Macks and their role signs said R115/116. They did run in opposite directions but always had the same designation. On those same Macks some of the route signs said R-4 and some had R4/114. I think it depended on what scroll was in what bus. I've wondered this myself and even asked drivers back in the days. That's how I found out about the Amboy Road route that never hit the road because it paralled the SIRT. Before the Mall the R-103 used to short turn at Richmond Avenue & Hylan Blvd where there is still a turnaround. I didn't see it mentioned but there was an R-108 that ran along with the R-113. The R-113 was mainly Richmond and Arthur Kill Roads to Tottenville. The R-108 ran only as far as Richmondtown. |

Were they just run in opposite directions from one another? Same for the 4 & 114-they both ran from Pt. Richmond Sq. to Richmondtown. What was the difference bet. them?Hound: I checked my collection of Staten Island bus maps from 1969 through 1986 and I see no reference to any route called the R or S - 116. There is an R-115, later S-115 that runs during rush hours apparently in both directions. The route had a nominal terminus at Seguine Avenue and Johnston Terrace. It ran clockwise via Johnston Avenue, Purdy Place Seguine Avenue, Foster Road,Rossville Avenue, Arthur Kill Road, Arden Avenue, Annadale Road, Amboy Road, Huguenot Avenue, Hylan Boulevard to Seguine Avenue and back to Johnston Terrace. Effective on September 13, 1987 the route was modified and re-designated S55/S56. Service on Seguine Avenue east of Hylan Boulevard was discontinued. The new route ran clockwise from the corner of Hylan Boulevard and Seguine Avenue as follows: via Seguine Avenue, Foster Road, Rossville Avenue, Arthur Kill Road, Arden Avenue, Annadale Road, Amboy Road, Luten Avenue and Hylan Boulevard back to Seguine Avenue. Buses ran in both directions around the loop. The S-55 ran clockwise while the S-56 ran anti-clockwise. The route was changed to Luten Avenue from Huguenot Avenue to serve the Tottenville High School. The new route is did not last very long. It is shown on the 1987 and 1988 maps. By the time the 1990 map was issued the S-55 and S-56 had been split into two separate routes each service on half of the previous loop and both were extended to the Staten Island Mall. They first insisted that the MTA paint all buses yellow that serve schools. The MTA convinced them that the buses were open to everyone although they were used primarily by school students since they were dispatched at the schools at arrival and dismissal times. The Feds withdrew their argument. |

Larry, I used to live on Kingdom Avenue & Amboy Road. I rode the R-115/116 in the early 1960's. I still have a 1965 S.I. yellow pages and the transit map printed in it had the route marked 115-116. The routing you have is perfect. I forget when they started to retire the Macks but their signs had it as 115/116. Do you or anyone remember when the Macks were retired? I know when the bridge opened the city sent ten GMC's to cover the R-7 because the Macks could never make the grade on the bridge. Thanks |

I forget when they started to retire the Macks but their signs had it as 115/116.<.i>That was the wonderful thing about the cloth roll signs. You could always go back and see what the routes were. With today's electronic signs once you turn off the power the information is gone. We had a route like the 115/116 in The Bronx. Usually it was the Bx 22 Country Club - Spencer Estates run. Once a day during the school term at about 2 O'Clock Mabstoa would split the route in a Bx 22 Contry Club Road routing and a Bx 22A Spencer Estates routing. I never saw the Bx 22A listed on any maps but the buses carried the rollsign reading for it. My knowledge of buses is limited but I can say that there were three orders of Macks in the period 1948 to 1956. They were 5000 - 5114 Model C-45 in 1948 5200 - 5599 Model C-50 in 1950 6000 - 6317 Model C-49 in 1956 The C-49's entered service on Staten Island in 1956 replacing the C-45s. They remained there until 1969 when they were replaced by the 5100 old-look buses. The C-49's assigned to Saten Island were numbered 6210 thru 6317. Larry, RedbirdR33 Larry, RedbirdR33 |

I rode the R-115/116 in the early 1960'sI did a little more digging and came up with a 1960 listing of routes by depots. Apparently Staten Island had only one depot at the time. It was the Castleton Avenue Garage and 186 buses were quartered there. The following routes were assigned to this depot. R-1 Elizabeth Ferry R-2 Bay Street R-3 Castleton Avenue R-4/114 Springville - Great Kills - Richmond R-5/101 Jersey Street - Brighton Avenue R-6 Victory Boulevard R-102 Henderson Avenue R-103 Tottenville R-104 Tompkins Avenue R-105 Crosstown R-106 Watchogue Road R-107 Forest Avenue R-108/113/117 Totenville - New Dorp Lane R-109 Midland Beach R-110 Manor Road R-111 Bradley Avenue R-112 Cateret Ferry R-115/116 Huguenot & Princess Bay Note that both the R-115 and R-116 are on this list. I am not familiar with all of these routes. Some of the older Staten Island guys can probably provide more information. In the early 1960's much of Staten Island was still undeveloped and unexplored. Taking a bus ride all the way down to Tottenville was a lot like taking a trip to the country. Note too the R-112 serving the Carteret Ferry. Now the Carteret Ferry stopped running about 1929 but there must have been some factories or marine yards in the area. The Carteret Ferry terminal on the Staten Island side was in the area that we now call Rossville but years ago was known as "Linoleumville". Larry, RedbirdR33 |

Some other thoughts...--All S.I. buses are either one digit or three digits in the early days. Was that because two companies operated buses before the city took over? One company used one digit, one used three? Nobody used two? I know in Manhattan, all the 1-0-something lines were owned by the same company. Was that true in Queens and Staten Island as well? --There's no bus service on Forest Ave. west of South Ave. I guess that area had no development, even though Forest Ave. is one of S.I.'s most important streets. Yet Western Avenue got 24 hour service in those days for the factories, ports and warehouses that used to be there. Now Western Ave. gets no service at all, as the S40 bus goes along Forest Ave. to the Goethels Bridge, 24/7. --It's odd to see the S3 terminate at Maple Parkway. Today the S46 goes along Brabant St. and all the way down South Ave. past the West Shore Expressway since there are so many new homes along that route and a shopping center at the end. And between Forest Ave. and Richmond Terr., South Ave. now has three bus lines serving it 24/7, S40, S46, S48. --Today, fewer bus lines serve Port Richmond, which really has seen better days. On this map, the S3 (now S46) looped through Port Richmond, the S4 (S44) terminated there and the S6 (S66) went there 24/7. Now the S66 is weekdays only, never restored to weekend or overnight service. --Was the S103S the shortest line in the system? Only two stops, Hylan Blvd. and Great Kills Beach, if I remember. I wonder why they didn't at least extend it to the Oakland Hts. SIR station? I remember seeing the bus parked near Hyland Blvd, the driver just waiting. Even though the ride only took a couple of minutes, they only ran it every 20 min. or so. Most of the time, the bus was just sitting there. What do mass transit riders do today to get to the beach. You gotta just walk? |

The Carteret Ferry was at the western end of Victory Blvd, which was Linoleumville, but is now Travis. Carteret Ferry still lives somewhere in the TA's system, because if you look at Bustime and put in stop 203067, it will come up.What is now Rossville was once Kreisherville. |

If you can see a copy of the March, 1973 Motor Coach Age it has a bus history of Staten Island, including a list of all the routes with their history and maps up to that year. |

Forest west of South still has very little development. You have a movie theater, Home Depot, and a few houses, and maybe a little bit of industry on the side streets, but that's about it.In the 1969 map on nycsubway.org, IIRC, the R107 ran along Forest Avenue and ended at Howland Hook. Sometime between 1969 and 1977, it was rerouted to end at the Mariners' Harbor Houses (Grandview & Brabant). Then later on, the S40 was rerouted via South Avenue & Forest Avenue to better serve Mariners' Harbor, the S48 was extended to Holland Avenue & Benjamin Place, and the S46 was extended to Grandview & Forest. Then in 1995 I believe, the S46 was extended to the WSP via the Teleport. Also, the S4 was the S59, not the S44. The S102 was the S44. |

The Carteret Ferry was at the end of Victory Blvd in what is now Travis. The current S62 bus(formerly 112)now terminates slightly east of there by the Con Ed plant by Wild Ave,which is now actually where Victory Blvd. ends. |

Was that then Isle Transportation?Hound: I'm sorry that I didn't answer your question right away but I wanted to do a get a little more information before I responded to you. Throughout World War II most if not all bus service on Staten Island was operated by the Staten Island Coach Company. This company decided to get out of the bus business in 1946 and service was then taken over by the Isle Transportation Company on July 10, 1946. This company went bankrupt in early 1947 and on February 23, 1947 the New York City Transit Authority assumed operations. The first new buses sent to Staten Island were the Mack C-45-GT's. General Motors TDH's in the 4600 and 4700 Series were assigned to Staten Island to supplement the Macks and replace the remaining Isle buses. Most of this information comes from a book titled "New York City Transit Buses 1945-1975 Photo Archive" by Guy E Martin. It was published in 2005 by Iconografix. You might be able to obtain a copy through e-bay. Larry, RedbirdR33 |
