I could never figure it out. Those were the days of the Macks and their role signs said R115/116. They did run in opposite directions but always had the same designation.

On those same Macks some of the route signs said R-4 and some had R4/114. I think it depended on what scroll was in what bus. I've wondered this myself and even asked drivers back in the days. That's how I found out about the Amboy Road route that never hit the road because it paralled the SIRT.

Before the Mall the R-103 used to short turn at Richmond Avenue & Hylan Blvd where there is still a turnaround. I didn't see it mentioned but there was an R-108 that ran along with the R-113. The R-113 was mainly Richmond and Arthur Kill Roads to Tottenville. The R-108 ran only as far as Richmondtown.
