Some other thoughts...

--All S.I. buses are either one digit or three digits in the early days. Was that because two companies operated buses before the city took over? One company used one digit, one used three? Nobody used two? I know in Manhattan, all the 1-0-something lines were owned by the same company. Was that true in Queens and Staten Island as well?

--There's no bus service on Forest Ave. west of South Ave. I guess that area had no development, even though Forest Ave. is one of S.I.'s most important streets. Yet Western Avenue got 24 hour service in those days for the factories, ports and warehouses that used to be there. Now Western Ave. gets no service at all, as the S40 bus goes along Forest Ave. to the Goethels Bridge, 24/7.

--It's odd to see the S3 terminate at Maple Parkway. Today the S46 goes along Brabant St. and all the way down South Ave. past the West Shore Expressway since there are so many new homes along that route and a shopping center at the end. And between Forest Ave. and Richmond Terr., South Ave. now has three bus lines serving it 24/7, S40, S46, S48.

--Today, fewer bus lines serve Port Richmond, which really has seen better days. On this map, the S3 (now S46) looped through Port Richmond, the S4 (S44) terminated there and the S6 (S66) went there 24/7. Now the S66 is weekdays only, never restored to weekend or overnight service.

--Was the S103S the shortest line in the system? Only two stops, Hylan Blvd. and Great Kills Beach, if I remember. I wonder why they didn't at least extend it to the Oakland Hts. SIR station? I remember seeing the bus parked near Hyland Blvd, the driver just waiting. Even though the ride only took a couple of minutes, they only ran it every 20 min. or so. Most of the time, the bus was just sitting there. What do mass transit riders do today to get to the beach. You gotta just walk?
