I rode the R-115/116 in the early 1960'sI did a little more digging and came up with a 1960 listing of routes by depots. Apparently Staten Island had only one depot at the time. It was the Castleton Avenue Garage and 186 buses were quartered there. The following routes were assigned to this depot. R-1 Elizabeth Ferry R-2 Bay Street R-3 Castleton Avenue R-4/114 Springville - Great Kills - Richmond R-5/101 Jersey Street - Brighton Avenue R-6 Victory Boulevard R-102 Henderson Avenue R-103 Tottenville R-104 Tompkins Avenue R-105 Crosstown R-106 Watchogue Road R-107 Forest Avenue R-108/113/117 Totenville - New Dorp Lane R-109 Midland Beach R-110 Manor Road R-111 Bradley Avenue R-112 Cateret Ferry R-115/116 Huguenot & Princess Bay Note that both the R-115 and R-116 are on this list. I am not familiar with all of these routes. Some of the older Staten Island guys can probably provide more information. In the early 1960's much of Staten Island was still undeveloped and unexplored. Taking a bus ride all the way down to Tottenville was a lot like taking a trip to the country. Note too the R-112 serving the Carteret Ferry. Now the Carteret Ferry stopped running about 1929 but there must have been some factories or marine yards in the area. The Carteret Ferry terminal on the Staten Island side was in the area that we now call Rossville but years ago was known as "Linoleumville". Larry, RedbirdR33 |
