My 1951 Fageol Twin Coach has door hand rails. I have photos of Fageol Twin Coach buses in Brooklyn in the silver and green paint scheme. They were lettered New York Board of Public Transportation. I have several 8 x 10 photos of them. In fact, I have quite a collection of 8 x 10 NYC bus photos from the late 1920's to the 1960's. |

The only Mack that I own is an electric trackless trolley built in 1939. When Hampton, Virginia sold off its last Mack buses some years ago, I looked into buying one. They were sent around to Mack Truck dealerships all over the country for disposal. The dealership closest to me had one and wanted a fortune for it.....somewhere around $ 10,000 if I recall correctly. I couldn't afford it. |

One of the things I loved about the Mack buses was the air release sound of the air brakes. Macks and Twin Coach buses had an air brake sound all their own. I recall bus operators using it to coax somebody out of their way without actually using the horn. And I grew up in Philly with hundreds of gasoline Mack buses. I loved the gurgling sound of those Mack gasoline Thermodyne engines, especially at an idle. They almost sounded like they were gargling. And who could forget that air hiss and clunk when the torque converter dropped out of direct drive. What great memories !! |

I respect you as you've been on the job and in supervision for many years. However, you're really in a knee jerk response to his every post, which means you can't help yourself either. Please ignore him, as feeding into him only will prolong what's wrong here, and at worse make you part of what's wrong here. It's easy for me to make these observations, but it's not easy to give into temptation. Perhaps I shouldn't say anything, as no one likes to be told what to do. |

I haven't been on a Mack since 1967, and your description brought back a lot of memories.A GM Old Look and Mack were very different with air brake and engine sounds.I would always enjoy the areas in the City where Macks and Old Looks were right next to each other, leaving a bus stop.Later, when MABSTOA added New Looks, that sound was added to the Macks and Old Looks. To me, the best era was 1962 to 1969, when all three bus types were around. |

It was that time period that I started getting into the hobbyof buses. I can remember the Ex-Surface Mack C-49's running on M101 in the Surface Transit paint scheme as a kid when I live in Manhattan. I also remember the GM TDH-5106's from Surface Transit and FACO that were quickly repainted into the two-tone green paint scheme. This is why it is so important for the younger guys to take advanage of the Vintage Buses while they are in revenue service, and understand what the bus transportation system in New York City was like back in the 50's and 60's. I know that the bus buffs of today like buses such as the Flx 870's, the RTS, and even the GM and Fxlible new-looks. But the buses of the 50's were tanks, and stood their ground when operating with other traffic. I like the Flxible and GMC New-Looks, the 870's, and the early RTS's too, but in my book, the old-looks were the best. MWAP |

This is betterthan nothing. Thanks. OK, I was pointing out that these Mack C-50DT's were nicknamed 'Binghamliners' for BoT Chairman Sidney Bingham. These Macks had sliding windows, but if they predate #9098 and her sisters, wouldn't this be the first bus with sliding windows ? Bill Newkirk |

From what you guys are saying about the Mack, it's a very different riding experience from the GM Old Looks. I hope to be able to make my way back up there for a ride.Looks, sounds and riding quality make riding a Mack a different experience. I do remember back in the mid 60's, i was riding a Mack C-49DT on the B-68 heading toward Bartel Pritchard Squaw. When we pulled into the Cortelyou Rd stop, anyone including me siting on the rear seat was actually lifted out of our seats since the bus bounced at the intersection. The Mack C-49DT has something in common with an RTS bus. Theres little if any overhang by the rear wheels and the rear door is extra wide. In fact #6259 is the opposite of #2969 in one regard. #2969 has an extra wide from door and a average width driver operated rear door, while #6259 has average width front door and a extra wide driver operated rear door, Yes and I do remember that pole and mini banister by the rear door. Yes Bill, the C-50's were the first buses on the BOT/NYCTA rosterto have sliding windows. However it should be noted that in 1949, GMC TDH-5101 #4899 had sliding standee, and rear windows, just like the C-50's. MWAP |

The wheelbase on the C-49-DT's were 289 1/2 inches, and had a 53 degree angle wheel cut, which made these someof the best buses on the system. MWAP |

I tip my hat to the mechanical engineers who have lovingly and painstakingly cared for this vintage fleet of buses that are running on the streets of NYC this year. From the pictures posted on this site of the exterior and interiors, these buses look like new.I have literally gone back over 50 years viewing these slides. The City should be proud of its vintage fleet.Your comment that it gives the youngsters here who are interested in buses, a chance to see, hear, and ride these classic gems, is so true. Those 50's models were tanks and I thank God I was around back then to ride in all the FACO and Surface Old Looks and Macks of that day.Glad that you were able to get in on it while they were still around in the 60's. A question for you.Did you like the Fifth Avenue Coach and Surface Transit paint schemes better than the MABSTOA two tone green? Personally, I loved the old paint schemes with the logos "Go The Motor Coach Way on FACO and "Ride The Surface Way" on Surface buses. |

Of course I like the old paint schemes fromFACCo and Surface Transit better than that two-tone green scheme. For me, the best scheme was the green and yellow that was used by both FACCo and Surface Transit in 1958-59. I am just glad that I had the chance to see those buses before they went to the scrape yard. And now, thanks to those guys at the ENY Base Shop, I have the chance relive history, and ride that big Mack on Tuesday. And Thank You for your comment about my post. Everyone should ride these great buses from the past. It brings back alot of memories for many people, including me! MWAP |

I knew you'd agree with me on the FACCo and Surface liveries! The Old Looks and Macks never looked right to me in that MABSTOA two tone green. I remember that 58-59 paint scheme.I was just watching a classic movie from 1959, "North By Northwest" by Alfred Hitchcock. There is a quick scene of Hitchcock running to catch a Fifth Avenue Old Look that shuts the door in his face and pulls away. That's the very paint scheme you like! |
