Just so long as they don't paint them "black and tan."

Funny you say that. This scheme from the 1960s was dubbed "black and tan". Only lasted until the mid-70s on the locomotives; there were certain kinds of passenger car that didn't get repainted until the 1990s though.

(That locomotive is pure EMD; the first-generation JL8, with eight-cylinder 567CR prime mover, built in LaGrange IL.)

This is the paint scheme that preceded it; two-tone green.

(This is one of the few diesels built in Ireland, or assembled; the body was built in Inchicore Works in 1950, but the prime mover is Sulzer and the traction motors are Metropolitan Vickers.)

In the UK, the term 'Asian' invariably connotes someone whose ancestors came from the South Asian subcontinent (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh or Sri Lanka). A former student of mine had a story about this. The student was from, China, and had a part-time job as an assistant in a clothes store. A British Asian (i.e. Indian or whatever) customer was very rude to her. Her boss - a white British man - saw this happen and afterwards said 'Bloody Asians!' My student then pointed out to him tha she was Asian too...

The London Underground doesn't call its lines by colours, but the yellow one on the map is the Circle Line. Maybe British Asians should object to the Bakerloo Line (brown on the map) and British people of Afro-Caribbean descent should object to the Northern Line (black on the map) !

Many of the gays in West Hollywood very much want the line connecting Hollywood to the Purple line (through WeHo) to be called the Pink line and so far that's what most transit advocates are calling it.

And (presumably by coincidence) CTA's Pink Line debuted the same day as the annual Pride Parade.

We have the yellow N, Q, R and W trains stopping at Canal Street in the heart of Chinatown and the N also stopping in a predominantly Asian section of Sunset Park at 8th Avenue and Fort Hamilton Parkway. Yet nobody here cries racism about it. I think somebody in Atlanta with nothing better to do with his pathetic life decided to instigate a fight over this. It's ridiculous. It's just a color. That can't be the reason. If they chose the 1979 colors on the basis of what color the dominant express line was, the Lexington Avenue line would be shown in purple today. Nassau Street would be shown in black (the J/QJ's old color). Because purple would be the Lex's color, the 7 would also have to be a different color.

Board discusses Midget mascot
The “appropriateness” of the Dickinson High School Midget mascot was a topic of discussion Monday during a Dickinson Public Schools board meeting, but no action was taken.
By: Beth Wischmeyer, The Dickinson Press

The “appropriateness” of the Dickinson High School Midget mascot was a topic of discussion Monday during a Dickinson Public Schools board meeting, but no action was taken.

Dean Rummel, school board president, had the item placed on Monday’s agenda so that, according to the agenda, “the board may initiate any discussion about the perception of the DHS mascot.”

Rummel said 14 years ago, the issue was heated and felt the board should again have a discussion on the appropriateness of the mascot.

Rummel presented materials to board members, which included a letter from a former DHS student supporting the change.

“The question I place in front of you is, I think it was not done very well last time, 14 years ago,” Rummel said. “I think if we’re going to do anything at all — and I’m not saying we’re to do anything at all, I’d like to hear from all of you — but my suggestion would be to have a public forum and to get input from students, staff, alumni, constituents of the schools district, to find out if, after 14 years, if there’s any reason to change the mascot or the name.”

The issue of changing the mascot was brought to a vote in June, 1997, and was voted down by residents and students, according to a June 4, 1997, article in The Dickinson Press.

The school board voted to drop the school nickname and mascot in the summer of 1996. Before a replacement mascot could be found, a public outcry led to the recall of three board members in November of that year.

Board member Morton Krieg, an original proponent of the mascot, said the image was created in the ’40s and ’50s by a radio announcer calling a basketball game, who dubbed the DHS basketball team “our midgets,” as they were small compared to their opponent.

In the ’70s, in a DHS contest put on by the student council, a mascot was chosen, known as the “Mighty Midget,” he added, and noted it is the official name of the mascot. Hagen Junior High also utilizes the mascot.

“The problem I’m having with this conversation right now is the burden of putting this back out for discussion should not come from the board,” Krieg said. “This should be something that should be coming from either the student body of Dickinson High School, or a public group that’s coming forward. You don’t want to tackle this. This is not a decision five board members should even have to make. You don’t want to push this.”

Krieg said since the 1996 recall vote, he has had a “pulse on how the name and mascot is perceived in our state and by those people out of our state.”

“I feel at this time there is no great public outcry, no great student outcry, and certainly no administrative recommendations, to act on the Midget name or mascot,” Krieg said. “To me, it’s a non-issue right now. I just feel this board does not have to be the moral compass of the community. You’re not elected to do that.”

Rummel asked for an opinion from Gary Thune, legal counsel for the North Dakota School Boards Association, on the legal status of the schools’ use of the mascot.

In a letter provided by Rummel, Thune states, generally, school officials have the authority to determine and change a school mascot or other symbols, and the general rule governing the selection of a mascot is that it should be free of discrimination on the basis of race, color or national origin.

Thune went on to state in his letter that “legal challenges to mascots have usually been unsuccessful,” and “while some may argue that use of the Midget mascot is offensive and is not good policy, its use does not appear to rise to the level of a constitutional violation.”

Board member Kris Fehr said the “elephant” in the room needs to be discussed.

“It’s OK to talk about it, I don’t know that anyone wants to make any decisions,” Fehr said. “But to just pretend that this is not existing is probably not right to do either.

“There are people who don’t like it, there are people who like it and there’s people that this is not anything that enters their mind.”

No action was taken on the item, but board members discussed somehow surveying the community, students and staff to get a feel for current views on the subject at a later date.

Then "occidental" is too. And if I get confused as to my whereabouts, I can't say I'm "disoriented". Ridiculous; the word "oriens" in Latin means the part of the sky where the sun rises, just as "occidens" refers to the part of the sky where the sun sets.

Yes. It demonstrates the risibility of people objecting to words in themselves. It's not the words that matter. There's no difference between saying, "Lynch the niggers!" and, "Lynch the African-Americans": both express the same unacceptable concept. Objecting to words just hides the problem rather than addressing it -- people's opinion's don't change just because you declare a word taboo, and you just end up declaring word after word to be taboo. All you achieve by doing so is weakening the English language's fitness to express totally innocent concepts, such as "Yellow Line".

I went to China back in 07 to visit family. They call bus routes by numbers and train routes by their destination. Weird names too. I'm sure they wouldn't get offended by the "color" line. HEll Chicago LOL. Perfect example. There's Asians in Chicago. Did they get offended by their colored lines? NO lol.

Oh yeah, because people were horrendously racist to some completely different minority in the past, we have to keep reminding their children and grandchildren even to the tenth generation that they're the progeny of awful sinful people who were born to be racists.

The only way of getting over racism is how it was done with the Irish: by viewing it all as a big joke, and then collectively realizing that the stereotypes perpetuated by the jokes weren't really true.

So you're just going to justify it? Not even apologize? You didn't have to use an ethnic slur that I've been called by a lot when I was in school just to make a point.

For the record: I have no issue with "Yellow Line." In fact, some Asians I know even have referred to the N/R/W as the "yellow line." Imagine that.

The part about the uproar over 'yellow line' IS laughable.
But I don't see any point in using the 'c' word [along the same line as I would never use the 'n' word].
I understand it's about the context, but there's no point in using the word at all.

Where did I ever say that I did not believe that negro slavery ever happened or shouldn't be remembered? It just shouldn't be used as a weapon against people who weren't even born in 1865, especially not by people who aren't even African-Americans.

But we are getting fairly close to invoking Godwin's Law here.

There's no point in your post either. We don't live in a teleological world. It was a language game pointed at dumb, humorless attitudes to race.
