If it's in the CBAs, it's probably not worth swapping for. If it's just a bonus, then sure, eliminate all freebies and discounts, not just the ones for retired employees. |

Sorry but this is a benefit given to the workers after years of hard work. It is a retirement benefit that is part of their pension.NYC DOE should have been paying the student fares all this time not the MTA. School districts across this country pay to transport their students, why shouldn't the NYC DOE? He is off his f-ing rocker. |

Don't get me started on that one. I was VERY pissed off at the way several prominent dEms turned their backs on Bill Thompson during the last election. Speaker Quinn and too many others were so f-ing sure Bloomberg was going to win, they forgot which party they were in and abandoned Thompson. I was VERY shocked at Obama's tepid support for Thompson, too.Just a little bit of support for Thompson from any of the top Dems would have changed NYC history. For the life of me, I still can't fathom why the Party big shots passed up the chance to have a Democratic mayor, the first one in 18 years. This is what I said about that nonsense right after the election. |

Sure, no problem, end the free MTA passes for ALL retired MTA personnel, providing he actually enacts these other measures.....1). No more NYPD/NYFD/City Agency parking placards for ALL officials!! They adhere to ALL parking/traffic regulations or face full summonsing!! 2). Revoke and sell all top management's agency provided (and taxpayer paid-for) vehicles that, while seemingly stating "OFFICIAL BUSINESS ONLY", are often found parked at locations outside the city, being used for weekend errands, and basically serving as a second personal vehicle for the user, plus revoke the parking placard it comes equipped with. 3). Make ALL officials, including NYPD & NYFD personnel, who are issued placards for REAL, ACTUAL official use and are using them while on duty for REAL, ACTUAL official use, have to sign them out and return them at the end of their work day, with failure to do so resulting in a fine, full revocation of the said placard, and/or suspension from the job for a stated amount of time otherwise, and anyone caught allowing a relative to use them for their own vehicle, to be fully terminated for official misconduct and abuse of governmental credentials. |

Now, now, don't go getting all sensible, Sir Paul...I was issued a Crown Vic with all the trimmings back in the days when I was assigned to the Office Of Emergency Management (MOEM)...the placards were useless half the time because I could never find a place to park the bloody thing...LOL! However, I agree with you that Bloomberg is being a horse's ass. Not mentioned in the article about this: Why on God's green earth would Bloomberg want to do this, and potentially force thousands more cars onto our already clogged streets? The retirees and others with free transit privileges or benefits actually help the environment and relieve traffic comgestion by USING those passes...did Bloomy forget that? |

I think that the reality is that Mayor Bloomberg is just about a Republicrat. His support among Democratic leaders recognizes this. Plus, said Democratic leaders were looking 4 years down the line. While Mr. Thompson could have been running for re-election, Mr. Bloomberg is going to have a mighty hard time adding on another term. |

If they are (un)lucky, I use my pensioner's pass once a month or less. The approximately $60 full fare per year it would cost me (but of course I would use a discounted card anyway) is hardly going to balance their budget. I can't see all the retirees in Florida and other warmer climes abusing their passes either. |

I heard somewhere one the radio that Billy Thompson lost by eight votes per electoral district when the numbers where spread out evenly. I wonder how many of the averaged eight where senior citizens?I am willing to bet that a majority of the senior citizens in this city are offended by the mayors statements. They, more than anyone else know the reality of a earned retirement and I am sure they resent the mayor belittling the rights and privileges of their friends and neighbors as something that can be taken away so the city can continue skirt it's responsibility to provide transportation to it's public school children. |

I repectfully beg to differ with you on your statement that "the parties are all an act". There are major differences and deep philosophical divergences in the parties' platforms, approaches to government, and policy positions. These range from which legislation gets passed, how budget dollars are spent, and, yes, even which public transit projects are (or aren't) funded to completion. The two major parties certainly do make a real and lasting difference in American life. That's why I'm a very active Democrat. The GOP does not share my political views, and has little or no interest in my needs or rights as a gay human being, to cite just one example. As for the question of ESA vs. SAS being cut as part of a default budget, it's really apples and oranges, as ESA is much, much closer to completion than SAS is. However, if the two projects were at equal stages of development, I would agree that SAS would be cut first. |

Capital funding IINM is ok funded for now, ESA is losing funding before the project is over but nothing to do with this situation, same thing with SAS. Capital funds can't be used for operations in this case maybe it should but can't. |

Bill Thompson could have won the election, despite Bloomberg's obscene campaign spending. You are correct that the election was much closer than the GOP ever admits (Bloomy is an independent, but ran on the GOP line). Just ONE campaign appearance by Obama on Thompson's behalf, might have changed NYC history.I'm willing to bet that many who voted for "shoo-in" Bloomberg regret that choice these days... |

He doesn't even ride it from his home to City Hall. He gets on at 59th Street and rides 3 stops to Brooklyn Bridge. What is that 10 minutes? And I doubt it if he even rides it home.He judges the entire system on those three stops. Let him try riding from the Grand Concourse one day. |

He claims's there is no logic to eliminate student passes and keeping retiree passes. Well, maybe if Mr. Mayor helped subsidize the passes like he supposed to, that would be off he table.I would like to ask him where the logic is in building a subway line to the Javits Center which he wants, when the MTA says its bus to the Javits Center from 42nd Street is underutilized and are proposing to eliminate it. |

He would argue discrimination if the income restriction were to be placed at $1 billion or more annual income, because it would only apply to him. He would think that it would be fairer if an annual income of $10,000 or more disqualified you from a half fare pass. After all the other day he rationalized big bonuses to executives as necessary for the economy and everyone should be fighting to let those executives whose companies received bailout money to have their bonuses. |

Actually, when you swipe your MetroCard at the turnstile, you're paying for access to the system, not necessarily transportation. The MTA's position on this is, you may remain inside fare control for as long as you like, as long as you are not breaking the rules or laws. You don't have to board a train. The only time your $2.25 is used solely for transport, is on a bus (you must exit the bus at its last stop). You have to leave the train at its terminal, but there is no requirement that you must also exit the system. |

Well the put in a restriction like BART has you have 2-2.5 hours (I forget the exact limit) to use the system, and if you stay longer they ask questions. Now that would require a swipe out system tho When I was fanning BART once (no cameras - wasn't allowed at the time) I took longer and the gates wouldn't let me out and the agent asked me why I was honest and she let me out and swiped me card in the booth to take my $$ |

I use my pass approximately six times a year; that won't put them in the black. And it's rather pointless to do so given that some retirees will qualify for reduced fares by being over the age of 65. If New York State in general wants to re-coup money, it's probably going to have to consider some type of income tax on retirement benefits regardless of private or public nature over a certain amount level of income. |

That's going after the wrong people in an attempt to rectify a financial problem that has been created by greed, grand larceny and a lack of use of a system of checks and balances. |

Idiot meaning dumb because doesn't understand the problems people face, what's wrong with the way the City and MTA operates, cares only about his rich friends and how to make them richer, doesn't feel anything for the poor and middle class, and totally out of touch with reality. Too bad his new hearing aid won't be able to fix any of that. |
