Hey guys i know its been along time since i last posted something but i have a question.

How long do you think the 32's are going to last. I know they scraped almost all of them and there's some still left on the E,F, and R. Correct me if im wrong.

I say they're going to last at least until December

Theu currently provide 100% of the C service and one or two A's. They are no longer used at all on the E. They can be found on the F and R, but not many.

I figure the ones running on the C will be the last to go, probably in the spring of next year.

I don't work for Transit and I have no inside source of information. But if I had to GUESS, I'd say less than 1 year. The R160s are coming in fast and furious, and other equipment, especially R46s are moving around the system. I'd say the TA wants to rid itself all 40+ year-old equipment super-ASAP.

R32's are no longer allowed on the F. The Jamaica ones are confined to R/V. The 207 assigned ones provide 100% of C service, with a smattering on the A.

By this time next year, the only 60' cars on the B division will be R160's. R46's, while remaining in Queens for R/V, will also be running on A/C where needed to provide service requirements.

The R46s stopped moving around after the R40 slants were retired. Now they're almost done with the rest of the R40s at Jamaica, after which they'll start retiring the R32s and R42s out of Jamaica as well. The R32s out of 207th and the R42s out of ENY will be the last to survive.

Yes, I was working along the (C) line recently, and we had numerous ABD's due to hot cars.

ABD's on the (C) are bad. Only makes the line worse when you can't even maintain an already exasperated 10-minute headway.

600' trains will be on the C next year when their R32's are retired by next year. I believe TD says by spring 2010.

From a few posts here, in regard to all the a/c failures on the R32's, I don't think they want to got thru another summer with them. I bet the ones formerly at Jamaica are the ones REALLY screwing up!

I don't see NYCT spending money breaking up 4 car R46 units. It would be at a high cost as you need hostlers to move the B cars and put in electric portions on the open end. Plus, a 6 car R46 is 450' and an 8 car R32 is 480', meaning less capacity and issues with the c/r board and CCTV's at curved stations.

edf40wrjww2msgDetail:detailStr

The retirement rate at Jamaica is about one 10-car train (various types) per week.

FWIW I Speculate as follows:

On August 17 there were 16 trains of 60-footers; 81 trains of R-46's; and 42 trains of R-160's.

The E needs 26 (all R-160).
The F needs 45 (roughly 30 R-46 and 15 R-160).
The G needs 12 4's (48 cars or 6 trains, all R-46).
The R gets roughly 36 R-46's and 3 60-footers.
The V gets roughly 4 R-46 trains and 9 60-footers.

Assuming there is one new train accepted each week (as has been the case), there should be enough to replace all the 60-footers along about R-160 Train #53. Also assuming the R-46's stay maxed out and the 60-footers get squeezed out (in other words the spares get tightened), there would be ROUGHLY 9-11 weeks left for the R-32's and R-42's at Jamaica (the R-40 Mods appear a cinch to disappear by the end of August).

That brings us to about the end of October.

Again, assuming one new train per week beyond that (Trains #54 thru 78), and one corresponding R-46 move for each to the A and C, it would take ROUGHLY 18-20 weeks to accumulate enough R-46's to replace the Phase I R-32's.

That appears to bring us ROUGHLY into March of 2010.

So, the answer to the question would be...ROUGHLY...October 2009 for the R-32's at Jamaica and March of 2010 for the R-32's at 207 Street, ASSUMING the spare ratios are squeezed a little to accelerate the removal of older cars.

Depending on when the Option I R-160A/Dash 1's begin to arrive at East New York, it's a guess that the MK R-42's on the J/Z will be around into the summer and fall of 2010. The 9943-9974 group will have CBTC which might make acceptance a tad longer to achieve, at least at first.

We shall see!

Regards,

George Chiasson Jr.

For the past year or so, R46 cars have been undergoing SMS at CI Main Shop. Once that program is completed (I have no idea how many have been done and how many are left) this would further accellerate retirements of the old 60' stock.

Yes, an "abandoned" interval.

For example, let me give you an imaginary "stretch", or flex of headway which occurs when a train needs to be ABD'd, in order to provide even headways. Let's say we have these five intervals on the (C):

1700
1710
1720
1730
1740

The train that arrived at Washington Heights - 168 Street to make the 1720 has too many hot cars, and needs to return to the yard. Now there's no train to make the 1720. The 1720 out of 168 will be ABD'd for no train, and the preceding interval adjusted. The new intervals are:

1700
1715
1730
1740

So the line temporary operates on an extended headway of 15 minutes, and then goes back to normal after the abandoned interval.

Exactly. Us old timers feel the job has been dumbed down to a fault. Sure, a hostler is not needed, even if 4 car units were seperated to accomodate 6 car/75' trains on the C. I wouldn't trust these new jacks with cuts and adds between B cars being accomplished by the necessity of having to operate from the A car. We did it with the R44's back in the day when they were all singles, but I just don't trust these new guys today.
