It's on the express tracks which is the lower level at that point. I wonder if it continues down Fort Hamilton Parway?

I never rode the express train to have noticed the bellmouth.
The route likely goes straight down Fort Hamilton. Maybe some minor turns here and there.

On the 7 line there are a few locations between Hunterspoint and 5 Avenue that were used as turning loops when the line was a Steinway Trolley. The tail tracks after Times Square speak for themselves. After Queensboro Plaza there is some iron work that suggests there was a provision for a BRT/BMT crosstown El going south on Jackson Avenue heading to Brooklyn.

On the L line there was the surface line that went toward Canarsie Pier after Rockaway Parkway. Between Atlantic and New Lotts Aves there was a track connection between the BRT/BMT and the LIRR. And at Montrose Ave there was a temporary track connection to the LIRR there. And I think south of Montrose Ave there was a few feet of tunnel built when builders were going the wrong way toward Morgan Avenue.

The Montrose tunnel was the way they loaded the Standards into the piece of the Canarsie Line that was built. There were no shop connections yet or any other connection to the line. The BRT towed the subway cars on streetcar tracks to a ramp they built to get into the subway tunnels. If you look up heading into Montrose city bound, the ceiling is still alot higher and before the RFW was fuzzied you could still see vestiges of the ramp. It wasn't a future line, it was merely a ramp in a hole in the ground!

Are we speaking of something in the tunnel, or the sealed-up portals (outdoors) that one can see to the south as a D or M train travels between 36th St and 9th Avenue?

Those portals look like they were never open- of course they could have been sealed so long ago that the concrete matches..

From this discussion, I'm drawing that the West End Line wasn't originally planned to be on top of the Culver at 9th Avenue- no?

Maybe in the next few weeks, if I can get an R32 or R42 R train, I could railfan this. I guess I'd see it pulling out of 36th Street southbound?

So does anyone know what the dummy portals visible in the cut between 36th St and 9th Avenue may have been intended or even used for?

Those stubs south of the 59th Street/4th Avenue station runs for about 150 feet. The S/B trackway has an MoW shed built on it, the N/B trackway is unobstructed, albeit much darker. The N/B trackway ends on a brick wall, giving away evidence of some sort of space beyond.

From a previous message: "After Queensboro Plaza there is some iron work that suggests there was a provision for a BRT/BMT crosstown El going south on Jackson Avenue heading to Brooklyn."

The track work at Queensborough Plaza existed at a time when the station was a dual structure to what is there now. There was a separate two level four track two platform structure for BMT trains which along with IRT trains that operated on both the Astoria and Flushing lines.

BMT trains (Standards, and similar trains) from Manhattan would terminate and relay on a track out of the station. While trains from Flushing and Astoria would terminate at the station platforms and resume service on the "other line" from which it came. Riders would walk transfer at that station for BMT trains to and from Manhattan.

When the Second Avenue elevated line was dismantled, I believe it was decided to have BMT trains dedicated to travel to Astoria, and Flushing trains dedicated to travel to 42nd Street-Timws Square. The BMT structure being redundant was torn down, and the tracks from the 60th Street tunnel routed to what was then the original IRT side of the complex. With the removal of the Second Avenue El, the IRT Flushing line would have no other connection to any other IRT subway line, except for the upper-level cross-over to/from the BMT lines. That cross-over was originally between the IRT subway trains to/from Times Square and the Second Avenue elevated.

Over the years, the un-necesary tracks were removed, while much of the iron-work remains to support the existing train lines. That iron-work is not evidence of BRT-BMT cross-town route.

Mike

I have not looked closely at the site in some time, but on the outside face of the large south structural girder that crosses Jackson Avenue - this is some of the remaining track structure that the BMT used under the original arrangement - aren't there some vertical elements where girders to a Jackson Avenue extension could have been attached?

It raises the question of how the BMT planned to connect their proposed crosstown line to the Queensboro Plaza station. The Jackson Avenue junction with the existing structure seems the most logical place, and I am guessing the crosstown trains would have terminated at the same platform as the Flushing/Astoria shuttle trains, unless there were plans to run through trains into Manhattan.

This would have made the BMT side of the station a major transfer point, and arguably more convenient for Brooklyn riders to/from Manhattan than the old GG service to Queens Plaza.

The brt layup track that paralells the #7 to flushing WAS intended to be a subway/el following much of of what is todays G line.look at the early drawings of QP& you`ll see the BRT line drawn in.At bedford/nostrand on the G is a 600foot brt subway tunnel that crosses under the G at this point.this tunnel was rediscovered in 1965 by a signal maintainer& his helper who[IIRC]were cleaning out a fan chamber&found a manhole, opened it up,smelled freshly poured concrete, went down a rung ladder& found themselves on a 600 foot empty subway tunnel that the T.A.had no blueprints on.thru extensive research I found out the end of the franklin shuttle was supposed to connect to QBP& this section of tunnel was built in anticapation of the G being built.no provision for a transfer station was built here.I never could find the entrance to this tunnel& am still trying[when the urge hits me]Joe brennan mentions this section on his website.
