The 42 St Shuttle uses 3, 3 and 4 cars. The Rockaway Park shuttle uses 4 cars. The Franklin Shuttle uses 2. The C, JZ, M, L uses 8 (60 ft) cars. For most of the Eastern Div stations, they can only platform 480 ft anyway. The G uses 4 cars at all times. The M uses 4 cars on weekends, when running from Metropolitan to Myrtle. The 5 uses 5 cars when running as the Dyre shuttle. Somebody is probably gonna come in here and say that the R uses a short train when running as the 4 Av shuttle, but that is not true. The Jamaica-Kew Gardens E shuttle also uses a full 10 cars. |

I remember catching a four car D train at about 4:00 in the morning back in 1972 or 1973, going from The Bronx to Brighton Beach with my girlfriend. The T/O was pulling up to the front of every station, so people standing in the rear half of the station had to run like hell to get to the rear car.....which is what happened to us when we boarded at 183rd Street. |

If memory serves right, I do remember seeing 8-car R62s as early as that same year, 1991 or so on a few weekends. They were in the process of being linked as the cars i remember were being moved into sequence (many were placed in sequences like 1301-10, 1471-80...and so forth). All the cars were linked by 1993 or so by then, IIRC...I also saw trains of Redbirds on the 4 operating 8-cars at that same time as well... |

That's what it's like riding the G at any given time - 300 ft trains on 700 ft platforms.....and many stations have different stopping points depending on if it's OPTO or not, so you might not always be standing in the right place. |

Actually the last R62 trainset to be linked was supposed to be the one (1431-40) wrecked at Union Square. Had the wreck not occured, it would have been linked shortly afterward. All 10 cars from 1431 to 1440 were already in one train at the time, but not yet consecutively joined. |

The Franklin uses 3. Both use Standards. The A almost always has 10 cars, but sometines 8 on weekends. The AA usually uses 4. The BB and CC use 8. |

I always found myself near the northern end of the platform at 34th St. on the 6th Ave. line, always forgetting it's over 700 feet long, and having to make a mad dash when a 10-car D would pull in. No. J and M trains were cut during midday hours at varying times during the 90's. Since I worked in Metro Mall during that era, I encountered them every day. The last midday 4 car train I remember riding was in the spring of '97. M trains were routinely cut during the 93-94 time period. That seemed to stop when the M and N exchanged places on the 4th Ave express/local. I hated riding the cut J trains because they still stopped at the 8 car markers. Very annoying if the exit was at the OTHER end. |

Part of that was also that while Lo-Vs were still on the Lex Exp, 10 car IRT trains were operated with 2 C/Rs. Once the Lex Av platforms were lengthened and the 2nd carmen were removed from mainline trains, Flushing trains were able to be extended to 10 and eventually 11 cars with only one C/R. |
