Even though I'm not at all a graffiti fan, I felt that it added a sense of place to what would otherwise be a standard overhead shot.Glad you liked it! |

Those cars are really photogenic, it seems. Would be cool to see those cars fly through the LEX at over 60 miles an hour.I prefer the PA-1, 2, and 3 cars, as opposed to the PA4s, because the older cars have nicer lines, and stainless strips, while the kawasakis are bland, and just corrugated. |

And the thing is, two doors per side is NO BIG DEAL when it comes to loading and unloading. the older cars with two doors are better becasue they have more passenger space.Three doors have no big advantage. Plus you can have more seats with two doors. BMT standards were 67 feet long, and had but three doors, and were used when transit had more usage. This dor nonsense is just that: Nonsense. They should rebuild some 60 footers with more seats, and three doors per side, the doors would be asymetrically spaced, but that would be OK. |

Yeah, believe it or not, some of these photos bring back childhood memories. I remember when there were still plenty of yellow(and a blue popped up sometimes) K cars in work service, though i guess that wasn't all that long ago. I have an intimate history with some of those places. Especially that perch from where he took the fourth photo. The tracks without third rail are freight tracks. It is used quite frequently now to move trains and reverse them to another track, but it wasn't always used so frequently. Used to have regular type trains instead of containers. What are in those gray and blue containers anyways? Was always interesting to see a freight train when it popped up though. |

No, it wouldnt be ok.BMT Standards loaded slower then IND R1-9s, just as PA1-3s load slower then PA4s. A reduction in the number of doors per car on 60 footers would be nothing short of disastrous. |

I believe the cars are over 60 foot long, maybe 67 like the BMT standards. |

Its importance to NJ rail commuting can't be overstated. At one time, it served not only the PRR, but also the LVRR, CNJ, RDG, even Erie and NYSW IIRC (before they had the financial footing to build their own terminals). There is no sign of a terminal at exchange place now. I see some embankments around there though The two inactive embankments are that of the Passaic & Harsimus Cove (PRR freight subsidiary) and the Erie embankment that used to go to Erie Terminal. The elevated railroad that went to Exchange Place was completely ripped out. Not even overhead electrification could save the terminal (it had the 11kV 25Hz overhead typical of the rest of the NEC, so if it had stayed open, even the Metroliner MUs could have left from there). This is my all-time favorite pic of the place. Pre-electrification, and when it still had the great arch shed. ![]() |

At one time, it served not only the PRR, but also the LVRR, CNJ, RDG, even Erie and NYSW IIRCI don't think the RDG/CNJ/B&O ran to Exchange Place, & here's my line of thinking. Feel free to add &/or correct: 1869: NY & Newark(CNJ) opens a terminal on the Hudson. 1873: Exchange Place opens. 1876: Delaware & Bound Brook (RDG) battles the PRR at Hopewell to to cross it's tracks, eventually to connect with the CNJ at Bound Brook. This little caper infuriates the PRR, one of many PRR/RDG squabbles of the era. According to James Holton's book, these two were on somewhat equal footing, PRR being longer & well known, RDG being richer in traffic. I don't recall reading anything about RDG at Exchange Place, nor seeing PRR helping out unless forced to. |

Yeah, except when i was younger, the trains didn't come every day like they do now, and the trains had a variety of rolling stock, now it is always a weird blue container train. They use that track to put the train on another track. The locomotives will eventually run around the train, and couple up to the rear of the train. |

The New Jersey Railroad had a terminal at Exchange Place before the PRR built the newer one. The CNJ ran to Exchange Place via a connecting track at Broad Street Station in Elizabethback then, the CNJ's western terminus was Elizabeth Port and the main lines of both the NJRR and CNJ were at-grade, crossing each other at a diamond. |

PATH aims for a CBTC signal system in a few years. The PA1/2/3s are nearing retirement age anyway, and would likely cost more to overhaul than would new trainsets. As to the PA4s, it's probably thought that fleet uniformity and overhaul costs militate in favor of their retirement too.Based on the NYCT experience on the Canarsie Line trying to implement CBTC - a process that is still not complete - I hope that PATH plans much better. |
