At one time, it served not only the PRR, but also the LVRR, CNJ, RDG, even Erie and NYSW IIRCI don't think the RDG/CNJ/B&O ran to Exchange Place, & here's my line of thinking. Feel free to add &/or correct: 1869: NY & Newark(CNJ) opens a terminal on the Hudson. 1873: Exchange Place opens. 1876: Delaware & Bound Brook (RDG) battles the PRR at Hopewell to to cross it's tracks, eventually to connect with the CNJ at Bound Brook. This little caper infuriates the PRR, one of many PRR/RDG squabbles of the era. According to James Holton's book, these two were on somewhat equal footing, PRR being longer & well known, RDG being richer in traffic. I don't recall reading anything about RDG at Exchange Place, nor seeing PRR helping out unless forced to. |
