when did that terminal shut down?

1961.

Its importance to NJ rail commuting can't be overstated. At one time, it served not only the PRR, but also the LVRR, CNJ, RDG, even Erie and NYSW IIRC (before they had the financial footing to build their own terminals).

There is no sign of a terminal at exchange place now. I see some embankments around there though

The two inactive embankments are that of the Passaic & Harsimus Cove (PRR freight subsidiary) and the Erie embankment that used to go to Erie Terminal. The elevated railroad that went to Exchange Place was completely ripped out. Not even overhead electrification could save the terminal (it had the 11kV 25Hz overhead typical of the rest of the NEC, so if it had stayed open, even the Metroliner MUs could have left from there).

This is my all-time favorite pic of the place. Pre-electrification, and when it still had the great arch shed.
