PATH aims for a CBTC signal system in a few years. The PA1/2/3s are nearing retirement age anyway, and would likely cost more to overhaul than would new trainsets. As to the PA4s, it's probably thought that fleet uniformity and overhaul costs militate in favor of their retirement too.Based on the NYCT experience on the Canarsie Line trying to implement CBTC - a process that is still not complete - I hope that PATH plans much better. |
