Extending the MARC to newark DE!!!! So now fially so you can go from new york city to washinton DC using only commuter rail!!!!In my opinion the most important and most ambitious part of the plan is the expansion of the capacity through the P&B tunnel. The other part is making all of the NEC in Maryland 4 track. What is in this plan kind of dovetails with what was discussed in the High speed rail on the NEC-300 kmh service thread. Quite ambitious indeed....No plans for electrification, though; I'll have to read through the entire plans. One can pretty much assume that all of the Penn Line (NEC) improvements will be electrified. (New P&B tunnel by Amtrak). Based of the cost figures in the documents ($2.963 billion NEC, $408 million Camden line and $533 million Brunswick Line) Maryland will be splitting the costs of the new tracks with CSX and Amtrak and costs of the new electrification with Amtrak. I would not assume that any wire will put up on the Camden or Brunswick Lines. John in the sand box of Maryland's eastern shore. |

But with the comment about electrification, I was wondering whether electrification would be extended at some point to the Brunswick or Camden Lines. Nonetheless, it's still a very ambitious plan. |

Of course, expect a 10 round fight from CSX for any improvements on the Camden and Brunswick lines, or Maryland to spend $$$$$ for their own tracks. |

CSX still wants Maryland to pay for lowering the floor in the Howard Street tunnel so CSX can run double stacks, not a chance. That grade separation of the Alexandra subdivision at MD-450 Annapolis Road in Bladensburg was a highway project.A friend of mine worked on the last contact with CSX for the Camden and Brunswick line for MARC. He remarked he'd rather have a root canal with no anesthetic than do that again. |

As a tiny CSX stockholder, all I can say is the geniuses in Jacksonville need some 2x4 to the skull treatments. Maryland should demand that if the stae pays for a third main track, they OWN it meaning the state is entitled to 1/3 of all "slots" on the route. By me CSX should be threatened w/ EPD to get their attention. This is a RR which can't deliver to consignees in a reliable manner and has constant signal failures/freight trains BIE--subscibe to MARC and VRE updates to watch . |

As any of us who remember PRR E44s know, electric is more efficient. Conrail junked freight motors because ATK charged them too much for the juice. |

Conrail junked freight motors because ATK charged them too much for the juice.Actually, it was a combination of outrageous trackage user fees,(as much as 2-1/2 times what the freight railroads charged each other) changing traffic patterns(downgrading, then eliminating Potomac Yard being the biggest example), & few electified routes outside Amtrak's milage that doomed 'em. |

MARC to Newark is definitely a good idea. I just wish there was a way to use the CSX tracks for commuter rail to Newark rather than the NEC. It's so much closer to the town and to UD. I'm also glad to see them wanting to reopen Mt Royal. |

Even all the way out to 2035?The DC freight bypass has gone nowhere beyond your basic conceptual proposal, that can’t even be said of the Baltimore freight bypass. The following is in the "MARC Growth & Investment Plan" (593 KB PDF file); "Extension of service through Baltimore City to Bayview (requires prior relocation of CSX freight traffic to new tunnel)" Beyond that line of text there is no mention of how much it would cost, who would pay for it, where the alignment be and when would it be built.
