This is one of the reasons my admiration for the system is largely historical as opposed to foaming or for that matter even caring about current operations. My comment "rules can be changed" was mostly a rhetorical response to those who say "rules are rules" since I really don't know much about the rule in question in the first place. From the perspective of the riding public it appears that the MTA is insensitive to their one need - getting to their destination as fast as possible. And MTA is surprised why virtually every line was graded a "C" or lower...

But I must say this is one of the reasons I truly admire the old BMT and they way they did things as opposed to NYCT - they maximized the use of Times Square as a terminal for West End, Brighton, and Sea Beach expresses and turned trains around in 2 minutes or less during rush hour. I know it can't be done today but it does not change the fact that it was done and done quite well at that...

However, to send another service via 63 means another line has to lose another service. A fifth service down the Queens Trunk would overwhelm it.

There are sizable numbers of customers for whom---even with the walking transfer---would end up with a 2-fare zone now, because they would lose their in-system Lex transfer at 59. It hurts more than it helps.

Sending the R via 63rd would work only if the "all stop at 49th" thing is eliminated, and/or NYCT is willing to either rename or realign the routes north of 57th. (The R to Astoria is not very attractive since it would lose direct yard access again.)

Using the current route names, the N and W have to be the Broadway locals so the Q & R would have a straight shot up the express. This means sending the N via Montague and the R over the bridge. The result is no switching at all needed in Manhattan except at Lex/63rd. Fred would just have to take some meds get over it.

A much costlier solution would be to connect 63rd Street to the Astoria line via the 11th Street cut. It would be a doozy of a project to hook them up, but at least Fred's beloved N would be sent straight to the Broadway express.

An even costlier solution is to build the super-express or another line to reduce the load on Queens Blvd: feeders from the 53/60/63 tubes into Northern Blvd, to 108 St, the LIE, Utopia Pky, Union Tpk, Little Neck Pky, terminating at Jericho Tpk.

The Q would leave the Queens Line before it sees the R, so any station on the Queens Line would be served by at most 4 routes… except for that strange time during the PM rush when G trains start to run on the line in addition to the E, F, R, and V.

Hey I'm sorry if the public dont like it if the trains dont move the way they used to but the public isnt going to pay my bills if i get clipped because "i have a need for speed"..

Even i remember how Lex ave has changed signal wise from when i was riding the trains...

It could be done today if NYCT would do things like deploy platform conductors at major terminii like Continental to speed fumigation. For trains that are relaying back into service, put the reverse operator on at the terminal, which would save the time it would take to walk the train to change ends. At Continental this means there could be 2 lines dropping out, with a third going through to 179th on the local with little or no hassle.

Of course, NYCT doesn't see the world this way. They will nickel and dime RTO when it comes to personnel, but won't think twice about dropping mondo dinero on studies to study previous studies...or letting loose all sorts of inefficiencies and managerial deficiences so capital projects can only but come in late and over-budget.

Y'all vote for the people who put the management in...

Performance of the RI tram has been extremely volatile, with extended periods of excellent service and periods where it just keeps on breaking down.

It is a nice tourist attraction.

I think it has value for that reason alone, and fact the it can be used for commuters is a nice bonus.

I disagree. I think it has enormous value, culturally, tourist wise and given that an overcrowded subway is the on;y direct link to Manhattan besides the tram, a necessity.

The subway is overcrowded for at most 1 hour each way per day. The tram provides negligible additional capacity. Tourist traffic and cultural value - I won't argue. But as a practical means of moving large masses of people, it's useless relative to the subway.

One thing: the elderly and infirm might avoid the subway because if an escalator goes out of service you could be screwed.

The Q has R68A surplus to which has 200 of them, and the B needs that where as the need for the Q is 136, so smaller should be for the Q and the uniform fleet to be on the B in my opinion. Thanks for the info on the R68's on the B!

Actually:

Having grown up in the area I would be proposing for the stop, if anything that is one area where you are more likely to have YIMBY's than NIMBY's, maninly because even with the SAS, it's still going to be quite a walk to 72nd/2nd or 83rd/2nd when that opens or as it is now to 77th/Lex.

A lot of people who live there would probably put it with the inconvience if it meant a stop on 76th or 79th and York-1st Avenues. Many people there don't drive because of all the congestion, and it would be a huge deal to have a subway stop there.

What could be done which would avoid all of that would be to connect the local track to 63rd. St. The track bed is there (though they built a concrete electrical room on it), and it merges right into the 63rd St. track at the top pf the ramp. This is because it was originally built to swing West to CPW, which BMT was trying to get. On the south bound side, the local trackbed veers away from the 63rd St. tracks. But once SAS is built, and nothing is terminating at 57th, it would not be as hard to bring the R onto the express track with the Q and cross it over afterward, as it would be in the northbound direction where the R would be merging in front of the Q.

Still, all of this stuff they are not going to do; as some of you know. What would benefit Roosevelt Island without changing up Broadway service like that, is to have the Queens/lower SAS line go through there. But still, they do not plan to use that connection, for the same reason the G on weekdays had to go. I had also thought of something like making the V the lower SAS line. But they don't seem to be considering any such thing. They probably feel more people want the 6th Ave./Bway corridor in the middle of the island, rather than the far East side.

BEfore the final Mahnattan Bridge completion plans came out, I had hoped they would replace the few E's from 179th with Q's, and the extra E's would instead come out of Jamaica Yard and run local from COntinental to Roosevelt Ave. (so that some local riders there would have a one seat ride to the express and not transfer at Roosevelt). But they don't seem to be into doing "specials" like that anymore, ulness it is an operational necessity (like the E's from 179th due to lack of space elsewhere).

Plus, since it is now decided that the Q is to extend into the upper SAS, they do not like to do major changes like that that are temporary, unless it is a phase of the final service plan. That's one reason they were holding off on the F express in Brooklyn. They didn't want to start it and then have to interrupt it for the reconstruction. Now, one person suggested this would be a sort of emergency temporary plan to address the shutdown of the Tram. That would be more of a reason for them to do it, but as others have pointed out, not turning trains right in front of the busy F line. A good solution to that in which 63rd could have been used as an intermediate terminal again would have been Sunnyside Yard. But it seems they dropped the idea of giving a part of that to Transit.

That's why I would be looking at building a new terminal station on the northern part of Roosevelt Island that can have the N train go through a new northern tunnel that would come into Manhattan at 76th or 79th and stop at York-1st Avenues before joining the Q to stop at 72nd/2nd and then with the Q onto the express track at 57th/7th (and the W becoming the full-time train out of Astroia). This tunnel could later be extended into Queens to create a new super express that can start on Queens Blvd. at the never-used upper level of the Roosevelt Avenue station with perhaps one other stop in Queens before Roosevelt Island and the UES stops before heading to Broadway.

This is one case where I suspect we would have YIMBYs as opposed to NIMBYs, especially since many who live on York and 1st Avenues have to currently walk a considerable distance in that area to get the 6 (and 4 in the overnights), and even the SAS won't help a lot of those people all that much since it will still be a walk to either 72nd or 83rd street to get the Q (and eventually T, though an improvement nonetheless). As one who actually grew up in that part of Manhattan, I know that even those who have money often use the subway because traffic is such a mess, so a 79th/York-1st Avenue station in particular would be a major help in that regard as the first stop coming from Roosevelt Island to Manhattan (and eventually a super express coming from Queens Blvd.).

A better idea to me is what I've already said elsewhere in this thread: A new tunnel via 76th or 79th street (with a York-1st Avenue stop in Manhattan) initially terminating on Roosevelt Island and eventually becoming a super express to/from the never-used upper level at Roosevely Avenue. This could be a new route for the N, while the W takes over Astoria full-time and the Q as planned goes up the SAS while the R remains as it is now.

Well...I'd be a YIMBY for that idea.

And now that I go back over my posts, I think the Broadway to Northern Blvd. line makes more sense as far as extending into Queens.

A very simple suggestion - for the 9-month period that the Tram is out of service, simply increase bus service from Roosevelt Island to nearby Queens subway stations.

There's no need to re-route subway lines, subway cars or trains.

By taking the bus to nearby Queens subway stations, the riders are then given a variety of routes to reach Manhattan. It may not be direct, but many Roosevelt Island services do come out of Queens.

Attempting to re-route the subway trains is just an exercise in pain. There are times when the politicians offer what simply can not be done. Increasing the bus service can easily be done.

As far as I am concerned there's no more need, if there was any at all to even attempt to discuss changes in subway service. The discussion is over with - just increase the bus service.

Yeah. When I was a kid I remember the express runs on Lex in particular being a lot more fun, especially if I wrangled me a redbird and looked out front...

Even the local is slower now too. Too bad. But they're gotta do what they gotta do if they don't think its "safe".

That's the point. "Your" organization writes a letter and it becomes NYCT's "problem" as how to impliment it. Live with what you have. You have the F train. For better or worse, all the other residents along the F line want more service too! I think Roosevelt Island residents are pissed that they have to squeeze onto a train that's already crowded. There is no place to turn the Q's other than at Continental or 179. Queens Blvd. is saturated with trains already. Even it was not, the financial increase needed in cars and crews would be astronomical.

It must be frustrating to live so close, yet so far from Manhattan, when living on Roosevelt Island.

Many people in New York City are too lazy and stupid to improve overcrowding. NYer's can do their part, but refuse to.

68th street on the 6 line is one example. On s/b trains the first six or seven cars tend to get crowded to the point that some people will have to wait for the next train, or squeeze in, causing delays. Yet, there's room enough in the rear cars-especially the very last car.

The average person is too lazy, or egotistical to walk to the back, even if it improves service, and riding conditions. It's a NY thing perhaps. "I'm standing my ground". "I was here first".

I'm sure that the Roosevelt Island residents are doing the same thing passengers at 68th/Lex are doing. Being too lazy to find a less crowded car.

The truth is, there are probably less-crowded cars on the F upon arrival at Roosevelt. Problem is, most people are just too lazy and stupid to look for one.

People walk down the stairs of a subway station, and just stand in that area of platform where the stairs are, because they're too lazy to walk 200 or 300 ft to the rear or front of the train, where there may be standing room.

If someone on Roosevelt Island takes the F every single day of his or her life, and knows that the cars in the middle of the train are too crowded(as the normally), they should look for room in another section. Sadly, this does not occur to enough people.

Rules don't exist soley to make our lives more difficult.

IMO they do till proven otherwise - they also exist to raise revenue for the state otherwise tax, traffic and parking laws could be significantly simplified....

Perhaps things operated differently in the past due to negligence, ignorance or outright carelessness.

Or greater efficiency and a better work ethic.

Remember, it was once legal to purchase a machine gun in a hardware store

But the change in that law has a logical explanation which is well known to the general public. OTOH Why do they have that stupid law that prevents me from owning an Iguana for a pet in NYC?????

True (I did forget about it by accident), but perhaps service could be altered a bit for R.I. residents (unless the Q102 runs the way it does due to beese shortage)? Or some assistance from the RIOC for that kind of service?
