I disagree. I think it has enormous value, culturally, tourist wise and given that an overcrowded subway is the on;y direct link to Manhattan besides the tram, a necessity.

The subway is overcrowded for at most 1 hour each way per day. The tram provides negligible additional capacity. Tourist traffic and cultural value - I won't argue. But as a practical means of moving large masses of people, it's useless relative to the subway.

One thing: the elderly and infirm might avoid the subway because if an escalator goes out of service you could be screwed.
