Tuscarora Almanac for June 3

1917 – from The Book of First Runs

The IRT 7th Avenue Line opens between Times Square (1,2,3 platforms) and 34th Street - Pennsylvania Station. Initially service is provided by shuttle trains between these two points.

1965 – from The Book of Wrecks

A layup train of R-1/9’s hits the bumping block east of Euclid Avenue Station. Lead car R-6 623 was badly damaged. The motorman was trapped for several hours and later died. Car 623 was scrapped on March 17, 1973.

Source: New York Division Bulletins, August 1965 & March 2006, article by Mr.Eric Oszustowicz

2011 – from The Book of First Runs

A three way free transfer point with “in house” controls opens. It will connect Court Square station on the IRT Flushing Line (7) with the Court Square-23rd Street station on the IND Queens Line (E,M) and the Court Square station on the IND Crosstown Line (G).

Coinciding with the opening “45th Road-Court House Square” station on the Flushing Line was renamed “Court Square”. “23rd Street-Ely Avenue station on the IND Queens Line was renamed “Court Square-23rd Street” back in May.

Luckily they've the wall tiles at 23rd-Ely alone. They're still in fantastic shape.

The pre-lettered and numbered tiles - those pointing to the exit - dated from the earliest days of the IND, and this station was the absolute last to use this variant (of which I counted six main ones).

But this station opened 7 years later, in 1940:

This station used another variant of that pre-lettered and numbered tile font (the one pointing to the exit) that, in this form, was previously used at the Sutphin, Parsons Blvd., and 169th Street stations of the Queens Boulevard line; plus 16 stations (between 181st and 137th Streets, 116th and 103rd Streets, 33rd and 23rd Streets, SB Astor Place through Canal Street, Worth Street, and Hoyt/Bridge Streets) for when the platforms on original 1904 IRT stations were lengthened in the late 1940's.

The 7's in the two photos below are clearly different, but the 23's above are pretty similar to me.

The one at bottom was one of the more noticeable variants. The tiles in this and six other stations - Woodhaven Boulevard, 63rd Drive, 67th Avenue and 71st-Continental Avenue on the Queens Boulevard route, and Utica Avenue, Ralph Avenue and Rockaway Avenue on the IND Fulton Street line - measured 4-5/16" x 4-5/16", with the border frame for the station name tablets 3-1/16". The 'S' on this set (as seen on the last-named station, pointing to Hopkinson Avenue) was also way different:

Compare others. This was from a section of the Elmhurst Avenue station; this was a re-tiled (and incomplete) job, with the 'S' as on the 1946-opened Broadway-East New York station before the 'EAST NY' was taken out and 'JUNCTION' put in its place:

Whereas, when originally tiled . . .

This variant at 65th Street is the same as on the High Street-Brooklyn Bridge and what was originally Broadway-Nassau Street stations (before the latter was re-tiled as "FULTON":

There seemed a slight difference in this Bronx station:

And here in Queens . . .

It appears that last one was used on the Lorimer Street station of the BMT's L line:

Anyone ever explain why only the Concourse line got those brick shaped tiles while no other IND line did?

Probably a different contractor did that tile work.

But remember, even with the regular tiles, some mezzanines on the Eighth Avenue line had those brick-shaped tiles.

The Hopkinson S is clearly different from all the others, which are similar to the S in East NY:

The Hopkinson S is plain and ordinary, but the East NY S is graceful and beautiful, heavier at the bottom than the top, with lovely curves and small flares at the ends of the strokes.

I always thought that those "brick-shaped tiles" were real bricks, not tiles at all. The original upper level of Fifth Ave (E,F) had them too, along with a unique red-green color combination of name tablets and stripes. (The lower level was all red.) The only photo on nycsubway of the bricks was taken during the renovation, which covered them over.

For years after the renovation, the bricks and one red-green name tablet could still be seen through the tower windows at the west end of the upper level, even after the tower was abandoned, but eventually the abandoned tower was completely removed and the remaining original section of the wall was also covered over.

What’s interesting about 5th Ave Tower is that it appears to have been added as an afterthought even though The 6th Ave line was always planned. The original tower that controlled the diamond Xover N/O Lex Ave was at the N/E of the platform and even after the control of the Xover was placed at 5th Ave Tower, the original model board remained in the tower space until the new signaling was installed. The model board doesn’t show 23rd/Ely since that station was not opened with the rest of the line. The IND had several T/D offices at various locations that did not seem to be a part of the original construction, but were added on. The ATD office on the S/B platform at Ctl and the T/D office that used to be on the now unused middle platform at 59th St are examples. I understand that there was also a similar add on ATD office on the S/B platform at W4th St upper level to alert W 4th St Tower which was on the lower level, whether the train in the station was for 8th Ave or Houston St.

That 'S' in 'EAST NY' was the same as on that re-tiled section of Elmhurst Avenue ('URST'). Also seen on some parts of the 174th-175th and 182nd-183rd Street stations in the Bronx, was also in some portions of the Queens Plaza station of the IND before the remodeling.

Same font variant on Court Square and Steinway Street stations. That 'Q' was also part of the sidewall for the Queens Plaza station before it was remodeled.

The other two were different. (In the case of 65th Street, the tint of purple/violet is the tipoff.)

Believe me, I have studied the intricacies of this legendary and iconic tiled type.

And then there was the variant used on the northernmost end of the IND Spring Street station (the extension that was built and opened in 1953). That variant looks like it was also used on the now-closed LIRR Woodhaven station in the section pointing to Jamaica and the Rockaways (as well as on their East New York station). A few samples:

That's too bad. I remember being astonished at seeing the original tilework, several years ago. With what did they cover the tiles?

The 'SPRING ST' below is exactly the type variant used on the Sixth Avenue stations from 47th-50th Street - Rockefeller Center to 14th Street. Though along the same lines and principles, this font variant is different from that on the IND's Spring Street station:

Notice that on that station, the arrows are different from the other IND stations tiled with that font variant.
