What’s interesting about 5th Ave Tower is that it appears to have been added as an afterthought even though The 6th Ave line was always planned. The original tower that controlled the diamond Xover N/O Lex Ave was at the N/E of the platform and even after the control of the Xover was placed at 5th Ave Tower, the original model board remained in the tower space until the new signaling was installed. The model board doesn’t show 23rd/Ely since that station was not opened with the rest of the line. The IND had several T/D offices at various locations that did not seem to be a part of the original construction, but were added on. The ATD office on the S/B platform at Ctl and the T/D office that used to be on the now unused middle platform at 59th St are examples. I understand that there was also a similar add on ATD office on the S/B platform at W4th St upper level to alert W 4th St Tower which was on the lower level, whether the train in the station was for 8th Ave or Houston St. |
