I always thought that those "brick-shaped tiles" were real bricks, not tiles at all. The original upper level of Fifth Ave (E,F) had them too, along with a unique red-green color combination of name tablets and stripes. (The lower level was all red.) The only photo on nycsubway of the bricks was taken during the renovation, which covered them over.  For years after the renovation, the bricks and one red-green name tablet could still be seen through the tower windows at the west end of the upper level, even after the tower was abandoned, but eventually the abandoned tower was completely removed and the remaining original section of the wall was also covered over. |
