Forest Avenue station, view from Fairview Avenue.

The Q cars and island platform gave it away. Next clue was an apparent traffic island off to the right.

Spot on! The other hint was the Q cars riding on heavier Dual contract structure, indicating that it was north of Myrtle/B'way.

Yes...the intersection is Putnam Ave to the right, Fairview in the foreground. Forest Ave, behind the photographer....the "traffic island" to the right made by those three streets

RandyO is right.

M1 track. M2 track on M line.

Same on J line.

If RandyO was a dispatcher calling that train by radio he might say, "southbound train at Forest Ave..". Or "Middle Village bound train at Forest come in to the tower".

There is a definite irrefutable logic behind referring to manhattan bound Myrtle as northbound. Prior to 1940, the 5th Ave Bay Ridge el connected to Myrtle near Navy street and continued over the Bkln Bridge to Park Row. Now the 5th Ave trains were definitely northbound as they originated at either 65 St or Stl on the Culver. Also recall that the trans going over the bridge were actually physically northbound also, so those two facts combined justify referring to Manhattan bound Myrtle trains as NORTHBOUND. I would strongly recommend that those of you who wish to both pursue the hobby as both ordinary buffs and transit historians familiarize yourselves with the history and the logic behind the transit system and the proper and accurate terminology that goes along with them.

Jim is not an MTA employee conducting a business conversation. The use of actual geographical direction is probably better for the purposes of his communication.

It should be east, not north in that case, but I’ll agree that Jim’s description is less likely to confuse the casual observer.

However, for the sake of uniformity standardized route descriptions have to be established. However, once you learn the proper terminology and the logic behind it, it’s not confusing at all. The only exception to the “through Bkln enroute to Manhattan is northbound” rule came in with the through routing of the Jamaica Line with the Brighton Line as the QJ. Although by conventional rules the QJ between Jamaica and Broad St was northbound, between Broad St and Stl it was southbound. To eliminate confusion the TA decided to make the entire route southbound between Jamaica and Stl and carried it over when the M was extended into the Southern Division. Th KK which shred the same trackage along Bway Bkln was still northbound since that was its direction in Manhattan. Now with the M being routed along 6th Ave to Ctl, it is once again properly northbound since it is northbound in Manhattan like the KK before it. Now that there is little, if any chance of any through routing between the Eastern and the Southern Div any more, it is only proper to rebadge the J line back to the original, namely northbound to Broad St and southbound to Jamaica.

I have no issue with anything you said. You speak in railroad and the rest of us who are not familiar with railroad geography speak in real world compass directives. It was like that with the old NYCRR/Conrail directions. Everything was either eastbound or westbound. For example, a train to Selkirk from NYC would be considered westbound even though it was geographically northbound & vice/versa. That was fairly simple, but with the NYC subways, its more complex than that.
I know of many rail/train buffs who refer to transit directions in their geographic reality.
Not knowing railroad north from south in the subway system doesn't automatically disqualify one from being a transit buff.

Which is fine. My issue is, he shouldn't try to impose it on the rest of it. He's implying that if we don't use the offical directions, then we are not real railfans. Fuck that.

However, for the sake of uniformity standardized route descriptions have to be established.

For the conduct of business in a railroad and all its subsidiaries, you are 100% correct.

For idle chitchat among various people, many of whom are not railroad employees, you are 100% incorrect.

Been a rail buff for as long as I been alive.
My father was THE Railroad man...while I am a spectator.
It's amazing how a simple suggestion, can "feel like" a win or lose situation.
Either you Do it the way I do it,and so many Other PROFESSIONAL RAILROAD FOLKS, or you aren't Really a train buff.

While I can understand the desire to establish some sort of content control,to a Less aware, less ridgid individual...it would seem as if You are belittling the average buff.. being Bully in some sort of way...

I mean ,if someone told you that today was Tuesday..and you didn't believe them...so that person tells you Because of your nonbeliever status you can never see Tuesday again... wouldn't you find That Ridiculous?

Does it Matter if the Non railroad people don't use RAIL ROAD DIRECTIONAL TERMS...
NO..it doesn't really..as long as The IDEA of what they are referring to is clear.

Gonna kick us out of the club cause we ain't real railfans?

I don’’t mean to come off as any sort of bully, but I seem to find that today’s railfans are disappointingly lacking in knowledge about the history and operation of the transit systems they like to railfan. In my early days of railfanning, I would often encounter TA employees and ask questions about various aspects of the system and also consulted with old time members of the ERA in an attempt to gain as much knowledge of the transit system as humanly possible. I should think that a hobbyist would be only too glad to accept the knowledge that I and other knowledgeable railfans are willing to impart rather than criticize us as “showing off!"

Randy, please stop correcting us if we wish to say "East" or "West". By now, you should realize that correcting us with your "Railroad North" or "Railroad South" will do little good, except to antagonize us! We used all four directions when we rode the subways, not just two!
