I think we should distinguish between subway and compass directions by using terms "subway north" or "subway south" or "compass north" or "compass south" (or "geographic north" or "geographic south"). When "east" or "west" are used, since east and west are not subway directions, they would obviously refer to compass directions.

I suppose. Only thing, what about lines that never leave their borough? (although that may only be the shuttles (42nd St and Franklin). The latter is an actual north-south route, so no problem there. 42nd St is a different story. It physically travels east-west, but based on the original 1904 route that it was a part of, Times Square is north and Grand Central is south. Before I knew about any of that, I was confused when I first rode the Shuttle (in 1973 I think) and wondered by Times Square was on the north roll of the R-17s and Grand Central was on the south. Of course, now I know

Interestingly, on the R-62As assigned to the 42 St shuttle, GC is on the north roll (probably drives a certain person crazy!) 😂

TS is available as a south terminal for the 7th Avenue line. Didn’t know that GC was available as a north terminal.

It obviously runs through more than one borough, but tell someone to get on the Queens-bound M.

So on the M train how do you distinguish direction with your method when trains are Queens bound in both directions? I remember an altercation between a passenger and a TA employee at Jay St when the passenger asked which platform to use for Queens. The problem is that there are Queens bound trains on both platforms, Fs to Jamaica on the N/B platform and As to Richmond Hill and the Rockaways on the S/B platform.

But unlike the doctor/patient relationship, the relationship between the railfan and the hobby is quite different. I am also sure that if a person who is not actually a doctor took an interest in medicine the way a railfan does in trains, that person would probably become very familiar with medical terminology.

About terminology. So I have been an electrician for nearly half a century. The common plug/outlet in your wall is technically a duplex receptacle. And it was in fact an MD that I helped raise (kind of an extra uncle) who gave me grief about using the trade jargon rather than the common coivilian terms when speaking to customers. I took his advice.
As to geographic v. "official" directions, I have, I believe noted two peculiarities before on this list.
First, within the RR world, because RRs need consistency, each 'division' has defined directionality. Trains crossing divisional borders change numbers to conform to division schemes. Most comically, Southern Pacific in its arrogance considered San Francisco the center of the universe. So a train from Portland to Oakland (w/ferry connections to SF) was a westbound. In the case of the Amtrak Coast Starlight, it was WB Portland to Oakland where it assumed an EB # as it headed to LA.
PRR PTTs showed NY-Wash trains as WB or EB, yet in their regional PTT listing trains from NYC south to Florida, New Orleans, etc, are shown as SB and NB.
It is also the inconvenient practice in Boston to use "Inbound" and "Outbound" but on the Red Line these swap in the downtown area. So signage is less than useful to a visitor.

Other major examples are in the Interstate Highway numbering systems. Here in the Bay Area we have a segment co-designated I 80 EB and I 580 WB running N-S.

Given that SubChat is a civilian rather than insider forum, Ibelieve using real world geographic directions can be combined with a note (RR SB, for example)

Sigh.

We are educated. Almost everyone here knows what railroad north and south are, with respect to the NYC Subway system. We choose not to use them, because compass directions (or actually usually Manhattan north and south) convey our meaning better to our intended audience.

DTLA is certainly no Manhattan, but our downtown streets are curiously aligned similarly to Manhattan for no apparent reason. Streets that are perfectly N-S take a 30 degree turn when they get downtown. Maybe they are aligned with the LA River? Not sure.
