I wonder why they put the master controller in the center on the R-211 which is the newest tech train? Is it feedback? Did they identify issues with the older R-143? I wonder if it's a width issue with B division trains being slightly wider? Anyway, I'm thinking the mentality decades ago on the R-142 was that it would see little to no CBTC and would be manually operated all of it's time in service. |

Was it ever "Eastern District" instead of "division"?I know it's named after the section of Williamsburg. The J might be the best line in the system. Mostly outdoors(but just enough tunnel time). Goes over a bridge. Mostly good neighborhoods. Not heavy ridership compared to other lines. New equipment. Not too long or short. |

How about?5 line, put-in Livonia Yard, go in service at New Lots to Nereid/238, then clean out train and lay it up in 239 yard. Lunch. Dead head to Dyre for a trip to Bowling Green. This day for a train operator is interesting. Start working IRT Brooklyn, then work both White Plains and Dyre lines. Probably be asked to lay up in Unionport too. |

My grandparents' final home was 1/2 block from the Newlots Av station. My parents and I lived with them from late 1962 (when we all moved in) to July 1964, when my parents bought their own home in lower Crown Heights, 2 blocks east of Ebbetts Field (by then the mammoth apartment complex had been built). But I was always over there even after we moved out. I enjoyed the ride on the (then) 2 out to Newlots, especially on a summer day at the open railfan window of an R-21 or R-22.The best part was, you could see the station from parts of the house. The pic below was taken from the kitchen, but there was also a good from "my" room (the room I stayed in whenever I was over there). Also from the front sunporch That was the house (the one on the right). If you turn the image to the south, you can see how close it was to the station. Notice the "no handball playing allowed" sign on the side of the Livonia substation. I swear that same sign was there in the 70s. I wonder if the kids today ignore it like we did 😂 |

I love the J line from a railfan perspective but it's extremely slow especially the old section from ENY to Crescent St. due to the sharp curves and stations in close proximity to each other. However it is interesting due to the ability to see the various neighborhoods it traverses before crossing the bridge into Manhattan and going underground for the rest of its journey to Broad St. |

I will always have a soft spot for the J, as it is the descendant of my grandfather's final line, the 15 Jamaica Local. It was a ride on his train at 4 years of age, that started me on a life of railfanning in general, and the NYC subway in particular. |

It probably enhanced it, but I mentioned elsewhere in this thread that it was a ride on my grandfather's 15 Jamaica Local train when I was 4 that set the spark (and we were living on Jerome St (me, my parents and grandparents) at that time.He always took transit to work, even when he owned a car. When I was first born, we lived on St. Marks Av, just past the 3-way intersection with Rockaway Av and Eastern Parkway. So he had a one-seat ride on the B12. Once we moved to East New York, I assume he took the B10 to Newlots/Pennsylvania, then the B20 to ENY. He reported early, like 5 AM, maybe a little earlier, so he probably rode "hawk" (I think that's the term) runs. He had a great mind, so he probably memorized the schedule. |

Not holding my breath, though. Maybe even 60s-era side destination signs (not much you can do about the bulkhead, better to keep the A/C than rip all that out just for the old bulkhead signs). |

My personal favorite is the Flushing line, especially that flyover express track over 111th St. When I was a kid, it kinda scared me to look down on the GCP & see all those "little" cars scooting by & then seeing a plane take off from Laguardia with its dark exhaust trailing. In the distance was the towers of the Whitestone Bridge.Amazing views! |
