They were rolling disasters without the WH cars to kick them along to make service. This was lipstick on a pig. They would have been better off keeping the Greens a few more months while they ran through the CAP program the 84-8500s. They had to know these wouldn't perform right leaving ENY as solid sets.

They weren't dingy when the ads were translucent. They didn't have lights down the center because they weren't needed. There was enough light. With paper ads the amount of light was noticeably reduced and they became dingy looking, because they were never meant to have paper ads.

With the paper ads, they need a row of lights down the center, but that would have.been more expensive than having to print separate translucent ads.

It wasn’t so much that the TA though the translucent ads were too expensive. The problem was that the TA wanted to charge the advertisers more money for the translucent ads and the advertisers didn’t want to pay the additional expense.

I recall the first few R-30 redbirds had pink seats and later I noticed they had been painted gray. I don’t know whether the ones with the gray seats were just a later bunch or if the first group also had the pink seats repainted.

If fact i could still smell the polyurethane paint up close. And when I climbed aboard the interiors were spotless including the windows. I don't think those cars ever saw service after being repainted.

Thanks, but it still boils down to more money. The MTA made the decision to ask advertisers for more money because they didn’t want to absorb the costs themselves. So it’s not that much different from what a I stated.

So the result was the MTA preferred dingy cars to spending a few bucks to maintain well lit cars.

Here is another minor difference that I remember. The cars with the backlit ads also had doors without the "shoe pocket" at the bottom. The rubber strip went down to the floor without the flare. They were the first cars like that.

All R38 Door frame posts are 100% stainless steel, compared to R32 door frame posts that had painted door frames with an aluminum cover that was screwed onto the painted door frames beginning at the top seat, and up to the top of the doorway.

Compared to previous Revenue cars that had shorter versions of the door frame covers, except R10 thru R15's which had only painted door frames. Rebuilt R32's for some odd reason had either all painted or all stainless steel door frame posts when they were returned from GOH.

The reason for that is all the plastic seats from the R-26s through the R-42s including the shapeless R-40 seats are interchangeable and there have been all sorts ot patchwork seat installations on the cars of all the divisions. The only seats not interchangeable with the original equipment ones are the replacement seats used on the R-12 s through R-22s.

There was also a small group of IRT care either R-29 or 33 with backlit ads but the admen on the IRT were not as circumspect as those on the other divisions and seldom installed the proper translucent ad cards making the cars constantly darker.

Hmm, those being GE cars, they probably appeared often on the 2. Seeing how often I rode that line (was the home route for my grandparents house until their deaths), I'm surprised I didn't encounter one of those (unless they took the backlit lights out before I was fully aware (around 1967-1968)).

As far as I can remember, the R-29s and 33s (except for the R-33 singles) were overhauled exactly the same way as the 26s and 28s except that while the 266 and 28s received NYAB Newtran brake valves, the 29s and 33s received WABCO brake valves. Also If I can recall the breakdown, the R-29s were GOHed by M & K while the 33s were done at 207 St Yd. They all had the center row of interior lights removed and the outer rows replaced completely and the lights were also rewired.
