[PHOTO] Location Identification

Posted by Bill Newkirk on Wed Sep 16 11:13:36 2020

3rd Ave EL demolition, but where ? The corner liquor store canopy has the number 175 but a search states that 175 in not on the corner but mid block.
So 175 might be the cross street. So what is the cross street ?

This is a "HANDS FREE ZONE" The astute student will note the absence of any hands!

No, on the cross street being 175st. Note the Chrysler Building is north of this location.

The "175 might be part of an address, but the awning seems to have a corner patch, which may cover part of the address. Like 175 E.** street.

View is north along west side of 3rd Ave. from E. 33rd Street in October 1955 to the demolition of the E. 34th Street Local Station, 3rd Ave EL. All the buildings at left side of photo are long gone for the whole block to E.34th St. -- and only the 3 buildings at the right edge of the photo along the east sidewalk of the avenue remain today. The other 3 buildings north up to E.34th street were demolished in recent years.

Hello Elkeeper

The last EL pillar (one of the newer 1915 installed heavier ones) was extracted at 3rd Avenue & 42nd Street on Friday, February 17, 1956. It was the last remains of the 1914-15 rebuilt section of the El and its new doubled decked E.42nd Street express station.

That rebuilt and much heavier EL structure segment of about 2 blocks length was only 40 years old when demolished. I have photos (given to me in 1958)taken that day - and the well preserved various NYC newspaper articles and photos of that event that day. It was a ceremony attended by various NYC Political officials including Manhattan Boro President the (now late) Hulan Jack. As well as crowds of public onlookers.

I ws there the day the last pillar came up. After the pillar was pulled, they arranged it horizontally and had about 4 or 5 construction workers stand on it to be photographed. As I recall they lifted the pillar a few feet off the ground a few times with the workers standing on it to try to get a good picture. The photo was in the next day’s daily News with the caption “Workers ride the last pillar out."

Although service on the el had ended a year earlier, the potion of the el between there and 42 St had to remain for another year since the structure carried power cables from a substation on 34 St just west of 3 Ave to feed the Flushing Line. Once different arrangements for power were made, the el was able to come down. It’s also interesting to note that there is a complete signal still standing just west of where the S/B lcl tk was. I have no idea why it wasn’t removed after service ended and set aside as a replacement part for the rest of the transit system.

Andy -

Yes, I ate in that particular 42nd & 3rd H&H AUTOMAT a few times with family before the EL was closed and removed --- and a number of times later myself between 1960 and 1964 for lunches. I ate in numerous H&H AUTOMATS -- there was a large one in my upper east side neighborhood I and my family used a lot in the 1950's and 60's -- about 1/2 block west from the EL also.

Hello EXP Rider --

You are welcome -- I figured you would enjoy it.

Here is a photo view N/E to the north side of E. 86th Street of my neighborhood H&H AUTOMAT back in the more easy going and sane days of my youth - and the movie theater my uncle was manager of for very many years --- and the EL was just down the block to the right until removed by end of 1955. Great neighborhood back then in the 1940's-60's years -- and cheap to live in too! Not like the very expensive and highly way overpriced yuppy-fied area it is today

regards - JoeF

I am agreeing with the Heading over the photo
3rd Ave EL demolition, but where ? The corner liquor store canopy has the number 175 but a search states that 175 in not on the corner but mid block.
So 175 might be the cross street. So what is the cross street ?

As children, we had 3 wardrobes, first and best was our Sunday clothes, after church we would change into our "play" clothes.
second was our school clothes. Finally, was our play clothes, the most comfortable.

Sunday clothes for me was "going out to a very nice restaurant with relatives" clothes, school clothes were what my brother and I were dragged around from dept. store to dept. store during August for my parents to purchase, play clothes were dungarees (what we called jeans back then), and hand me down shirts from older cousins.
- any of which might be worn on the subway depending on the reason my family went "into the city" that day.
