A retired inidividual formerly with the TA who has been one of the mentors of the transit enthusiast community had told me accounts of where records, papers, etc. of historic value were simply being tossed into dumpsters at Jay St. during the late 1960s - the reasoning being that this was about old, outdated, obsolete, infrastructure, rolling stock, etc. so it had no value.

And the major players, and carers about the preservation of NY transit history, in spite of the museum, still seem to be the private individuals, among them former TA employees, who collect, save, and preserve, primary source records and material of the TA, and its pre-1940 predessors; who realize that the agency cannot be relied upon to save and preserve its own history. Very sad...

Quite the opposite from TfL and its predecessor London Transport, where preserving its own history has long been an area of great pride for the agency.

On my first day with the Department of City Planning on December 31, 1973, several of us were told to throw out everything in a small closet because it had been in there a long time. We found many very old and rare transit maps and reports, many of which we split up and took home rather than throw out. They didn't even ask us to decide what we thought was worth preserving. How stupid. So it's not only the TA that engages in dumb practices.

Well we actually wouldn’t have even needed to go all the way to the 39 St ferry. We could have parked the car on 4 Av near 39 St and boarded the car there., or even better,
just taken the subway to 36 St and walked to 39 St.

Why did the retaining walls change south of Church Avenue on the Brighton?
Built at different times. Line was originally in open cut from south of Eastern Parkway (current Franklin Shuttle) to south of Church Ave. Grade separation and widening south of Church Ave happened first (around 1910?). Widening of cut from Prospect Park to south of Church Ave. was 1918-20.

Yes, I've heard stories, or "the story" about that. Don't rememeber his name, but when some bigwig assumed a top managing position, he demanded that all old LIRR records in the building, anything "dated" be thrown out immediately and threatened legal action against anyone who tried to save material or take it home. This was told to me second hand, by a friend, regular LIRR commuter who had heard this from a conductor.

You ccan only shake your head. Just so sad.

Hope you are able to anyway.
As a child, I grew up in Bell Park Manor Terrace, on Hillside ave. when my family started taking the E & F train into Manhattan, I remember my Mother walking me up to the front of the train and showing me the RFW, without me even asking. My Dad always took me up there too,* The rest is history.

Videotape was prohibitively expensive in those days, and it was common practice to reuse tapes whenever possible. The prevailing attitude was that no one would be interested in seeing a program again. Fortunately, the NBC video footage of Games 3, 4 and 5 of the 1969 World Series still survives in color and Games 1 and 2 survive in black and white (Canadian Broadcast Company footage).

A few years after I graduated from UConn, they hired a new marching band director who immediately tried to erase the past. He threw away who knows how many scrapbooks, arrangements and other memorabilia. Some of it was thankfully salvaged, but a lot of history was lost. He lasted about six years before moving on.

I may be either too dense or too ancient to even be able to define "shade". That said, I am a bit more of a rivet counter although I admit to going into moral/political issues a few times--which ultimately I regret. Steve, I expect, remembers my calling him out some years back which ultimately was of little value in preserving the history of rail transit.

At the time my mom/Dad showed me the RFW, I was probably somewhere around five going on six years old, or just six - we didn't live close, close, to the subway* (like around the corner or downt the block from a station/entrance), so though I have early vague memories of being on the subway, maybe before 5 even, I certainly didn't know enough to realize that there was an RFW.... but like everyone else, once I found out about it, that where my family always rode - in that first car.

* Bell Park Manor Terrace, at the corner of Hillside and Springfield was a longish bus ride from 179th for a six year old - so didn't live in a neighborhood within walking distance to a subway station - underground or elevated.

We'd take the bus that stopped on Hillside by where we lived to 179th st.
